HHD Icons

As some of you have already noticed, I've uploaded HHD furniture icons for all ACNL furniture series. Editors may feel free to use these in the appropriate articles as a replacement for ACNL furniture images in tables. Any existing ACNL furniture images should be moved to a Gallery section at the bottom of the page. I plan to continue uploading icons for furniture themes, sets and categories as well as wallpaper and flooring. Eventually I hope to add every icon if possible, but we'll see how things go... I apologize for any confusion or inconvenience my mass image uploading may have caused thus far. ;P Sunmarshsignature.png (talk) 16:22, February 15, 2016 (EST)

Amazing work, nice job Sun! ~SuperHamster Talk 04:11, February 16, 2016 (EST)
Thanks, SuperHamster. :) Just making a note here, for some flooring, the game stores two images- the background image and the carpet or pattern that sits on top of it. When this happens, I have to piece together the background and foreground images in an editor. In some cases I was unable to identify the exact way the patterns were used to create a given piece of flooring. In these cases I did my best but the results aren't 100% accurate matches. Two files that come to mind...

Establishing furniture pages for odds and ends

I've been uploading HHD icons and updating furniture pages for the past few weeks. I'm nearing the end of the established furniture sets and will start to upload the odds and ends in the next few days. This brings up the age-old question of how to group the furniture into meaningful units. I've been browsing the wiki to see how this is currently being done... and to be frank- it's a mess. We've discussed this before over on the forums (point 2) and I'm still of the same opinion- the unofficial groupings aren't very helpful and only serve to confuse and clutter our furniture pages.

Here's some examples:

In the Nintendo Power guide to Animal Crossing is a list of furniture called "Household Items". Included in this list are the Retro TV and Wide-Screen TV. In the Wild World guide these items are moved to a separate list called "Color Televisions" and in the City Folk guide they are listed as just "Televisions". Back to the Household Items list, the Barrel and Keg will move to the Pirate Ship Theme in Wild World onward. The Toilet and Super Toilet stay in the "Household Items" list in the Wild World guide but move to the "Water Closet Set" in the City Folk guide, even though they are NOT an official set in that game, and on Nookipedia they are found on a page called Toilets.

I could go on and on. The major problem here is that the lists in these game guides are arbitrary groupings created by the guide writers and are not official designations. They just made these lists up. We're essentially doing the same thing with pages like Digit lamps. I agree that it's nice to see similar items grouped together on the same page, but there comes a point where these groupings become a hindrance rather than a help. For example, we have a page for Miscellaneous Items and Odds and Ends. How is a user to know, just by looking at the name of the page, which items it's going to contain?

So what's the solution? I don't know that there is one that will satisfy everyone, but I think we need to throw the names and unofficial groupings of items from the game guides out the window. They are totally inconsistent and in some case (e.g. Water Closet Set) just plain wrong. I also don't think that we can do much better. Even if we group the items together more consistently across titles, we are making completely arbitrary decisions that may seem logical to us personally, but may not be so transparent to the users of the site (e.g. How does a user know what items will be on the Household Items page? All furniture goes in the house!).

My vote is to create master lists of 'unsorted furniture' (name is a WIP and open to discussion, perhaps 'all other furniture in Game Name' would be more appropriate?) that would list all furniture that is not part of an established series, theme, set, or category. This would eliminate the dozens of unofficial item groupings we've created. Items can be grouped logically within the table rather than alphabetically- e.g.Zero Lamp, One Lamp etc. listed one after the other.

What are everyone's thoughts on this? If you are in favor of creating pages for unofficial item groupings, how do you plan on grouping together 'random' items? Any feedback would be appreciated. Sunmarshsignature.png (talk) 10:33, March 3, 2016 (EST)

I have to agree that the miscellaneous furniture is tricky to group conveniently. In the meantime, we should create articles of "Miscellaneous furniture in [game]" (much neater and concise than "all other") and scrap articles based on arbitrary groupings, which means most of the articles under "Other Furniture" in {{furniture}} have got to go, and I'll rewrite parts of Nookipedia:Project Furniture to comply. There is a lot of confusion on how these lists are grouped and how should we group, which is Not Good. For instance, I've never figured out what "Household Items" is supposed to contain. What doesn't help is that there are no official lists besides the data mining that shows items being grouped by themes and sets. For your suggestion to group logically within the table, there might be question to what should be grouped. Some are obvious like the Digit Lamps, others, not so much. Mario Signature.png 16:45, April 14, 2016 (EDT)
Just FYI, I've already created a page called Unsorted furniture. I agree that grouping together like items on this page will be rather arbitrary, and actually quite difficult, mostly because there are just so many items. It's also going to take a very, very long time. :| Sunmarshsignature.png (talk) 17:05, April 14, 2016 (EDT)
I think "Miscellaneous furniture" would be a more suitable name because, well, that's what they are. I also think they should be split into articles by game so we don't get a list that's 171,052 bytes long and that's before filling in data and images. Right now, I'll get started to fill in some information. Mario Signature.png 14:25, April 15, 2016 (EDT)
Sorry for the slow reply! After some thought, I agree that the name 'Unsorted furniture' is confusing (it implies the furniture needs to be sorted- it doesn't), and have moved the article accordingly. I've also incorporated the gamelink feature from Template:TableHeader so that the table now links to separate pages for each game in the series in the upper right hand corner of the table. I am still concerned about the article's size, but haven't really thought of a way to manage that as the whole point of the endeavor was to consolidate arbitrarily-named item pages, not create more. Sunmarshsignature.png (talk) 17:52, May 7, 2016 (EDT)

One more thing, how are we going to organize refurbished furniture? Yes, some miscellaneous items, such as the patchwork and the digit lamps, can be refurbished. Mario Signature.png 19:31, April 15, 2016 (EDT)

A very good question, Mario! And one which I've been thinking about myself as I've browsed our pages. My current thinking is a complete overhaul to the bare bones refurbishing furniture page. The revamped page would provide a complete list of refurbishable items in table format with either a) a collapsible container with images of the different refurbishing options or b) a very simple list where each item is a link to a section of a page called Refurbishing furniture/gallery where all the refurbished photos for every item are displayed. The up-side to creating the big page with sections for each piece of furniture (or furniture series) is that we can transclude that information onto other pages. For example, we could have Refurbishing furniture/gallery#Blue_Series transcluded into a section called "Refurbishing options" on the Blue Series main article page. Just some ideas I'm throwing around right now. Would love to hear other people's thoughts. Sunmarshsignature.png (talk) 17:52, May 7, 2016 (EDT)

Fish Capitalization

Back in 2014 I moved some of the fish articles to lowercase (Sea bass, Red snapper etc.), but in line with our current policy, I now feel they should all be moved to uppercase (Sea Bass, Red Snapper etc.). Any other opinions? Red (talk) Red Snapper WW Sprite.png 14:07, May 29, 2016 (EDT)

Although I fully supported capitalizing the names of furniture items for aesthetic reasons, I am not so keen on doing it to bug, fish, and fossil articles. That said, the results that I got from searching "white tailed deer" were about half and half. Government and higher education websites had the entire name capitalized, while other sites (including Wikipedia) only had the first word capitalized. I don't really care what we do to be honest. --XXSuperXXNintendoXx (talk) 16:19, May 29, 2016 (EDT)
You should probably do so for consistency reasons. Mario Signature.png 00:16, May 30, 2016 (EDT)
I've just thought of a problem, though. I'll have to move a bunch of images to uppercase otherwise Template:FishInfoWW and Template:FishInfoCF won't display them properly. Maybe it's more trouble than it's worth... Red (talk) Red Snapper WW Sprite.png 13:52, May 30, 2016 (EDT)
Or just redesign the template so that won't happen. I'm not a template wizard though. Mario Signature.png 21:42, May 30, 2016 (EDT)
If the template is redesigned then we would need to manually insert the link to each image on every fish page, which is just as troublesome. I'll move all the critter pages and fix the image links as I go, hopefully within the next week. Thanks for the heads up. Sunmarshsignature.png (talk) 15:50, June 12, 2016 (EDT)

Anything to do?

Is there anything that I can help do? Sadly I don't have any Animal Crossing games yet. Mr Random (talk) 14:27, May 30, 2016 (EDT)

Nookipedia:Project Furniture has information AND useful resources that can be a help for someone who even hasn't played a single Animal Crossing game. And yes, we're definitely not complete there, but thanks to sunmarsh (talk | contribs | logs)'s hard work, you might have to look a little bit. Mario Signature.png 17:38, May 30, 2016 (EDT)

Nookipedia Decals

I was going to post this on the forums, but decided to bring it up here for increased visibility; my apologies if this isn't the right place to discuss this.

I wanted to have a few decals printed with the Nookipedia logo to stick on the back of my car and was wondering if a) anyone know of a good site/service/person to order the decal(s) from and b) if anyone would be interested in splitting the cost or purchasing a decal from me (at cost, of course). If anyone is interested let me know here or on my talk page. I'll post here again before I do any ordering so you have a chance to think about it. :) Sunmarshsignature.png (talk) 11:42, June 19, 2016 (EDT)

I don't know of any decal services personally, but if you let me know which logo you intend to use I can try to get you a higher quality source file if I still have it around. Most print shops ask for files to be at least 300 DPI. --Jake 13:48, June 19, 2016 (EDT)
That's a great idea Sun! My go-to site for stickers and decals is Sticker Mule. Can be pricey, but the quality is top-notch. In my dream world, I'm thinking we might as well order a bunch to give to all our editors, and maybe host giveaways on other platforms (our social media + /r/animalcrossing) - though shipping costs could quickly add up...might be a cost I'm willing to shoulder. ~SuperHamster Talk 14:29, June 19, 2016 (EDT)
Well, I'm all for a quality product, but I don't think I can afford the sticker mule price tag by myself. I think having stickers we could send out to editors (or editors-to-be) would be a fun way to get users involved and spread the word about the wiki, but shipping costs are something to think about, and I don't think I can commit to sending them out, so if we were to go that route someone else would have to be responsible for that. ^^;
As for the logo design, I actually intended to recreate the logo. I've been meaning to for a while now but haven't had the chance. I came up with the design below while playing around. I have an alternate version without the Nook eyes, but I thought it was pretty fun so I wanted to see what everyone thought. I'm not necessarily petitioning to change the logo, but I did want to create a new version for the decals that isn't all fuzzy wuzzy. ;P Let me know what you think.
NookipedialogoSmall.pngSunmarshsignature.png (talk) 20:24, June 19, 2016 (EDT)
Hey, sorry for the late reply! Regarding stickers for a Nookipedia giveaway of sorts, I certainly don't expect you to take on the cost :) Something I'm thinking we could do either using Nookipedia's funds or my own.
As for the logo, I'm loving it - really creative idea. I think it's worth discussing if we want to officially change the logo - from a branding perspective, I wouldn't want to hand the stickers out on Nookipedia's behalf unless they're an official logo. ~SuperHamster Talk 01:48, June 28, 2016 (EDT)
Yes, I agree about the logo. I've actually been trying to find time to redesign it but school has kept me busy this summer. The current logo was originally designed as a temporary placeholder but has long overstayed its welcome. Perhaps we could open up some kind of community contest/collaboration to work on new logo designs and give feedback? And of course if we go through with the decals the cost can be covered by Nookipedia's funds. --Jake 14:19, June 28, 2016 (EDT)
A logo design competition sounds great! Perhaps guidelines for submission can be posted at Nookipedia:Logo Design Contest and we can advertise for it on the main page? I'm not sure to what extent we want the design to be print-ready (e.g. ask for CMYK vector files), but I would be willing to convert the final design to the appropriate format for printing, if need be. I know not everyone is proficient in graphic design but I don't want that to prevent anyone from submitting an entry. Glad to hear Nookipedia can help with the costs- thanks for the replies! Sunmarshsignature.png (talk) 16:13, June 28, 2016 (EDT)

┌──────────────────────────────────────┘
Just an update, I've taken the initiative to create the submission page here. I know we didn't come to a consensus on the submission details, so feel free to edit the page as you see fit. For legal reasons I think it's best not to describe the submission page as a 'contest' or offer a 'prize'. If the vinyl stickers do end up coming to fruition the decision can be made at that time whether or not to offer one or more stickers to the logo's designer as a 'thanks'. Sunmarshsignature.png (talk) 17:36, August 10, 2016 (EDT)

Awesome Sunmarsh, thanks for jumping on this! I can push it on our social media and the rest of NIWA in the coming days. ~SuperHamster Talk 21:58, August 10, 2016 (EDT)
Sidenote - I think we have an issue with just doing CC-BY-SA 3.0 licensing. That license would require all uses of the logo to have an attribute back to the author, which wouldn't be feasible for our logo. Should we require the logo's copyright be released to Nookipedia? ~SuperHamster Talk 22:03, August 10, 2016 (EDT)
I didn't think about that... ^^; Whatever you think works best/will be necessary, feel free to edit the page to whatever you feel is appropriate.Sunmarshsignature.png (talk) 23:54, August 10, 2016 (EDT)

Main page

I just wanted to point out the Event Notice regarding the fireworks show. They're only in August yet in July the notice is going off. Can someone please fix it? I'd also like to thank whoever added the "Creatures out right now" section, it's incredibly useful! Thanks! Finch (talk) 17:56, July 4, 2016 (EDT)

Hey Finch! Thanks for pointing that out. Our event notices are based on the days found at Schedule:Months - it looks like the schedule still has holidays from the original Animal Crossing, and is missing a few from Animal Crossing: New Leaf. I'll work on adding these in during the next few days (and anyone else reading this is welcome to help!)
As for creature notice, that was put together by our very own Sunmarsh. ~SuperHamster Talk 01:05, July 5, 2016 (EDT)

We are missing something

We need an Admin noticeboard where users make Sockpuppet and Vandal reports. That's all. Mario und Prinzessin Peach.jpg Princess Peach Bulborb Buffet.jpg 18:15, August 4, 2016 (EDT)

Hmm, good point. That wouldn't be a bad idea. I think we've traditionally not had one since we're a relatively small wiki, in which nearly all edits are patrolled / it's easy to get in contact with an administrator. Having a central location for making requests to staff could be useful though, and would make the process more clear for editors. Anyone else have any thoughts? ~SuperHamster Talk 00:26, August 5, 2016 (EDT)
MarioWiki set up an admin noticeboard not so long ago, but I'm not certain that it's necessary here. We have a low amount of vandalism and sockpuppetry, and I'd rather not draw attention to vandals. If you see something, tell any administrator, although it's likely that we'll check the recent changes and see vandalism on our own. Red (talk) Red Snapper WW Sprite.png 11:32, August 6, 2016 (EDT)

New policy

I think we need a Username policy to prevent unacceptable usernames. Mario und Prinzessin Peach.jpg Princess Peach Bulborb Buffet.jpg 20:35, August 18, 2016 (EDT)

I am against this. When someone signs up for something, the last thing they will check is a site policy. People are free to express themselves how they please and if there is an issue with their username, either they created it willingly or staff will tell them. ~PoizonMushro0mPoizonMush Sig.png 16:51, September 26, 2016 (EDT)

Community Fountain Talk Page Archive?

Given the size of this talk page now, would it be safe to say it's time to archive it and start anew? ~PoizonMushro0mPoizonMush Sig.png 18:37, September 26, 2016 (EDT)

I've archived the 2015 discussions; 2016 ones should wait until the end of the year. Red (talk)Red Snapper HHD Icon.png 13:23, September 28, 2016 (EDT)
Was mainly talking of last years, but I agree on 2016. Thank you! :) ~PoizonMushro0mPoizonMush Sig.png 22:34, September 28, 2016 (EDT)

Help

I wanted to know if someone could make a list of villagers that need their amiibo card fronts and if I should use NA versions instead of Japan versions. (since the wiki uses us spellings) If so send a list or something. Tigerlily525 (talk) 19:56, September 28, 2016 (EDT)

As far as I know, the NA amiibo cards are encouraged. Don't know if any villager pages need amiibo card images as I just barely became active myself. ~PoizonMushro0mPoizonMush Sig.png 22:37, September 28, 2016 (EDT)

Main Page

There is something wrong on the main page....just wanted to see if someone could change it. Explorers Day doesn't list NL as a game the event occurs in...thanks (ps happy early explorers day) -Tigerlily525 (talk)

While not in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, the event does appear in Animal Crossing and Animal Crossing: City Folk. There are still people today that play these titles, so it helps them stay on top of events, especially since most events in Animal Crossing yield town models. Hope this helps! ~PoizonMushro0mPoizonMush Sig.png 00:57, October 10, 2016 (EDT)
Update: Double-checked the event's page and the event does in fact appear in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. The event involves Isabelle handing a boat model and there is also a face standee present in the plaza as well. Sorry for the minor confusion! ~PoizonMushro0mPoizonMush Sig.png 01:05, October 10, 2016 (EDT)
I've corrected the mistake on Nookipedia:Months/October. Thanks for telling us (although those pages are unprotected, so you can fix the mistakes yourself if you like)! Red (talk)Red Snapper HHD Icon.png 11:38, October 11, 2016 (EDT)

Welcome amiibo info needed addition to Community Fountain page

Happened to notice when visiting the Community Fountain page that we do not have Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo up there with Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer and Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival for the first bullet. I would have added it myself, but only admins and above can edit the page. ;) ~PoizonMushro0mPoizonMush Sig.png 18:53, December 27, 2016 (EST)

Main page is showing the wrong time

Hi, I signed up mainly so I could see what bugs and fish are available in my local time zone. Unfortunately, the main page is showing the server time, not my local time, so most of the information there is wrong for me. Is there any way to fix this, please? Thanks! Bruxition (talk) 06:00, December 31, 2016 (EST)

There should be some time zone settings in Preferences tab, I know you said it doesn't work for you, but it probably wouldn't hurt to see if you configured it correctly. If that doesn't work, the server runs off Eastern Standard Time as the server is located in the Eastern US. ~PoizonMushro0mPoizonMush Sig.png 06:43, December 31, 2016 (EST)
Yeah, it's under Appearance, and it's set correctly. The odd thing is that on that page it also incorrectly gives my local time as the server time. As I type this, it says "Server time: 17:29" and "Local time: 17:29". Bruxition (talk) 12:30, December 31, 2016 (EST)
Just chiming in from the template site of things, the way the template that generates the current bugs/fish are coded, I think it will pull the time from the server regardless, but I'm not 100% sure. Given the fact that the local time is showing up incorrectly under Appearance, it's a moot point. I've just finished coding the templates used on the main page so you can now use special parameters to adjust the time they display data for. The three templates are Template:CurrentBugs, Template:CurrentFish, and Template:CurrentSeafood. Simply use the parameters add or subtract as needed to adjust the time. For example: {{CurrentBugs|subtract=5}} will produce the table shown on the main page, but at -5hrs server time. You could place the adjusted templates on your userpage, for example. I hope this helps.Sunmarshsignature.png (talk) 18:58, December 31, 2016 (EST)
