The hourly music in New Horizons
Current time (server): 12 PM EDT

Hourly music is the music mechanic that appears in all mainline Animal Crossing series games. The music that plays in the player's town changes depending to the current hour of the day. There are also variants of this music depending on the town's weather that typically preserve the melody while using different instruments. Most hourly themes use a leitmotif from the game's title theme.

In Animal Crossing

In Animal Crossing, hourly music is unlocked after completing the part-time job at Tom Nook's store. There are unique versions of each hourly theme for snowy weather and the cherry blossom season, but unlike later games, there is only one theme for rainy days.

Animal Crossing's hourly music were composed by Kenta Nagata, who also composed the game's title theme.[1][2]

In Wild World and City Folk

In Animal Crossing: Wild World and City Folk, hourly music is unlocked after completing the part-time job at Tom Nook's store. The two games use the same themes, although the latter is in higher quality. There is no hourly music for the cherry blossom season, but introduces proper hourly music for rainy and snowy days, which is the standard that all later games follow. The rainy themes replace the melody with a glockenspiel, and the snowy themes are identical to the rainy ones with added jingle bells.

The hourly themes in Wild World were composed by Kazumi Totaka.[3] A cover of the 2 AM theme by K.K. Slider was included in Animal Crossing Sound CD: Keke Choice! Mix, which was later given a rock remix in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The 3 PM and 6 AM themes were also included in a medley erroneously titled "Title (Animal Crossing)," renamed "Title (Animal Crossing: Wild World) (Brawl)" in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The 2 AM theme was also included in a medley beginning in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U titled "Plaza / Title Theme - Animal Crossing: City Folk / Animal Crossing: Wild World." The 3 PM and 2 AM themes are included in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's new remix of "Title (Animal Crossing: Wild World)".

The soundtrack for 🎬 Gekijōban Doubutsu no Mori included titles for some themes based on the scene they were used in: "My Home" (あたしのおうち Atashi no ouchi?) (5 PM), "Margie's Cherrie Pie" (サリーのチェリーパイ Sarī no cherī pai?) (4 PM), "Summer Vacation" (バカンス de サマー Bakansa de Samā?) (7 AM), "Mother" (はは様 Haha-sama?) (3 PM), "On a Lonely Night" (寂しい夜に Sabishī yoru ni?) (9 PM), and "Silvery World" (銀世界 Ginsekai?) (3 PM). The original versions of 2 AM, 1 PM, and 8 PM were also included as bonus tracks. Machi e Ikou yo Doubutsu no Mori ~Mori no Ongakukai~ also included the City Folk versions of 9 AM, 3 PM, 8 PM, and 2 AM.

In City Folk, the following names can be found for the hourly themes in the game files:

12 AM: RB
1 AM: AOR02
2 AM: MamaPapa
3 AM: Ribbon
4 AM: Quiet
5 AM: Echo
6 AM: Boogaloo
7 AM: Skip
8 AM: Plain808
9 AM: Rock02
10 AM: LullabyWaltz
11 AM: FreeSoul
12 PM: Bossa02
1 PM: REGGAE
2 PM: BOSSA01
3 PM: CALM
4 PM: REGGAE02

6 PM: PHAROAH
7 PM: SCHOOLWALTZ
8 PM: AOR01
9 PM: BROKENBEATS
10 PM: SATELLITE
11 PM: CAJON

The name "MamaPapa" for 2 AM aligns with Totaka's comment in an interview in Nintendo Dream Vol. 141 (the same issue bundled with Keke Choice Mix!) that he composed the piece as a song for mothers and their children.

In New Leaf

The hourly music in New Leaf
Current time (server): 12 PM EDT

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, hourly music is unlocked for the mayor after the tree-planting ceremony at the town's plaza. Currently, this is shortest method to unlock this mechanic in any game. If the player is not the mayor, hourly music is unlocked after setting up a tent.

New Leaf's 8 AM and 7 PM themes were composed by Manaka Kataoka, who also composed the title. The former was included in an official sheet music book[4], while the latter was featured as a remix/medley with the theme from Main Street in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate titled "Outdoors at 7 p.m. (Sunny) / Main Street - Animal Crossing: New Leaf."

In New Horizons

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, hourly music is unlocked for the Resident Representative after upgrading Resident Services during the main storyline. Currently, this is longest method to unlock this mechanic in any game. If other players join after Resident Services is established, hourly music is unlocked after setting up a tent.

Atsumare Dōbutsu no Mori: Original Soundtrack included the original recordings of the hourly music on discs 1 and 2 and gave the following composer credits:

Yasuaki Iwata: 12 AM, 3 AM, 6 AM, 1 PM, 3 PM, 6 PM, 8 PM, 11 PM
Yumi Takahashi: 1 AM, 4 AM, 10 AM, 11 AM, 4 PM, 9 PM, 10 PM
Kazumi Totaka: 2 AM, 5 AM, 7 AM, 8 AM, 9 AM, 12 PM, 2 PM, 5 PM, 7 PM
