From Nookipedia, the Animal Crossing wiki

This is a work-in-progress guide to taking high-quality, native-resolution screenshots for every game in the Animal Crossing series. This isn't policy, just notes from my experience trying to get screenshots for these games.

Home consoles

Nintendo 64

Doubutsu no Mori doesn't run perfectly on any Nintendo 64 emulator, but it seems to run the best (and most accurately) in Project64 with the paraLLEl video plugin. GlideN64 has extreme graphical glitches with things like menus and is prone to crashes, so it's not recommended. paraLLEl still crashes sometimes and trying to play an NES game freezes the emulator, but it generally works. Unfortunately, every N64 emulator uses your computer's clock for the game's clock and does not allow you to change it in-game.

Optimal paraLLEl video settings in Project64:

  • VI AA — Off
  • VI divot filter — On
  • VI de-dithering — On
  • VI bilinear filtering — Off

Note that paraLLEl's screenshot function in Project64 appears to be broken, so you have to take a screenshot of the window. Make sure the window is set to 640x480 (the lowest it can go), and then downscale it to 320x240 without any interpolation and crop off any black bars. This should result in a 313x237 image. There seems to be a common misconception online that this game supports the Expansion Pak and runs at 480i with it. This is not true; Doubutsu no Mori does not support the Expansion Pak at all and always runs at 240p.

Dòngwù Sēnlín requires some additional work, being an iQue Player game. You have to download this patch and apply it to the game's ROM so that it can be run on an N64 emulator.

Nintendo GameCube/Wii

For GameCube and Wii games, use Dolphin.

Optimal video settings in Dolphin:

  • General
    • Auto-Adjust Window Size — Checked
  • Enhancements
    • Internal Resolution — Native (640x528)
    • Anti-Aliasing — None
    • Anisotropic Filtering — 1x
    • Force 24-Bit Color — Unchecked
  • Advanced
    • Dump at Internal Resolution — Checked

Native resolutions for the Animal Crossing GCN/Wii games (NTSC versions should be used unless specifically showcasing PAL-only content):

City Folk aspect ratio

Like most Wii games, City Folk supports both 4:3 and 16:9. 16:9 should be used for screenshots, since more of the image is visible and the menus were designed with 16:9 in mind, being partially cut off on the left and right in 4:3. To change the Wii's aspect ratio in Dolphin, go to Config -> Wii -> Aspect Ratio. Do not change the aspect ratio setting in the Graphics settings; leave that at "Auto".

One weird quirk of the 16:9 mode is that the keyboard menu is stretched from 4:3 to fill the screen. Nothing else is stretched in 16:9, so it's fine to use overall, but screenshots of the keyboard specifically should be in 4:3.

Native screenshots

Both Doubutsu no Mori e+ and City Folk support taking screenshots natively if you're using an SD card, but neither are optimal for wiki usage. Doubutsu no Mori e+ screenshots are high-quality and uncompressed, but they all have a Nintendo watermark in the bottom-right corner. City Folk screenshots, on the other hand, are heavily compressed.

Wii U

It's possible to take lossless, native-resolution screenshots with a softmodded Wii U using this plugin. Make sure to set the output format to PNG.

You can also use the Cemu emulator. Unfortunately, there's a bug in amiibo Festival where after scanning one amiibo, the amiibo scanning functionality breaks, essentially making the game unplayable. So, to get screenshots beyond the beginning of the game, you have to use a modded Wii U. Animal Crossing Plaza works fine, but you'll have to copy your online files from your Wii U in order for the Mii to appear properly.

The native resolution of both amiibo Festival and Animal Crossing Plaza is 1280x720 for the TV screen and 854x480 for the GamePad screen.

Nintendo Switch

Unfortunately, the Switch's native screenshot capture capability is less than ideal. It saves as a 720p (regardless of game resolution), compressed JPG. There also doesn't appear to be any homebrew options for taking full-resolution, lossless screenshots, so you'll have to use an emulator like yuzu. Note that you'll have to dump the console keys from an actual Switch in order to play games on yuzu.

The native resolution of New Horizons is 1920x1080.
