Beds are quite essential in the more recent Animal Crossing series games because it is how the player can save their game by going to their attic. The player will start off with a bed in the attic the same colour as the roof of the house they picked. In Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival and Animal Crossing, there is no attic in any house, so beds aren't as important in these games. In all games in the series, beds can be placed anywhere in the house and can be lied on, but upon lying on a bed that isn't in the attic, the player will not be asked if they want to save and quit.
The player can change their bed in the attic by pressing the "A" in front of the bed (Also behind the bed in Animal Crossing: Wild World). The player must have the bed they want to switch it out with in their pockets. The player will be asked if they want to switch out the bed. If 'Yes' is chosen, the pockets will be brought up to select a new bed. After a new bed is selected and confirmed, the beds will be switched out and the old one will be found in the pockets where the old one was. Anything the player can lie on can be used for this.
Some beds in the games are double beds. When a player lies on a double bed, they can move in the direction of the free space on the bed to roll over to it. In more recent games, 2 players connecting via WiFi or Local Communications can lie on a double bed together. When a player tries to roll over to where the other player is, they will just bounce off the other player. Two single beds put next to each other can count as a double bed. More single beds put together can make triple beds, etc.
