The Chess Theme is a furniture theme that first appears in Doubutsu no Mori. It consists of of twelve chess piece furniture items—six black and six white—and a matching wallpaper and carpet.

In Animal Crossing: Wild World, the wallpaper and carpet were removed and the theme was split into two sets: the White Chess Set and the Black Chess Set. While the wallpaper and carpet returned in Animal Crossing: City Folk and later Animal Crossing: New Leaf, the collection remained a set. In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, the two sets were merged into the customizable Chess Set.
