Artwork of a player holding a net in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

The Net is a tool used to catch insects as well as arachnids and crustaceans, which can be found all around town. Catching and donating insects is required to complete the museum's collection. All insects that are caught with a net are recorded in the player's encyclopedia.

Flick also carries a net named "Bügnir," a black net with spikes.

Usage

A player holding the net in the water

Using the net will cause it to swing in front of the player. If the net strikes an insect, the player will successfully catch it. Striking flowers will cause the petals to fly, though it does no actual damage to them. Striking a villager three times with a net will prompt an immediate reaction (the villager tells the player to stop doing it) and make them angry or upset, and cause the player to loose friendship points with the villager. The player can also hit the net on a fish shadow and it will swim away.

In Animal Crossing, Doubutsu no Mori, Doubutsu no Mori e+, New Leaf, and New Horizons, the player can hold the "A" button with a net to move very slowly, and when the button is released, they will swing the net.

More advanced versions of the net can also be obtained. The Silver Net and Golden Net are larger than the standard net, increasing their range and making it much easier to catch insects.

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, villagers will occasionally attempt to catch insects, although they will never actually catch anything. Additionally, in New Horizons, gifting a net to a villager will replace the Net item as their default net.
