Questions about undoing edits

Excuse my newbieness, but is there any difference between undoing an article's most recent edit, editing/saving the penultimate author's edit, and rolling back the edit? I realize that 'undo' will auto-populate the change summary field, is that the only difference? (Haven't tried rollback yet, tbh... does it let you provide a summary?) EDIT: Also, do I still need to mark an edit as patrolled even after I revert it? And (stupid question) should I make sure to patrol all edits that I see that need patrolling? --sunmarsh (talk) 23:02, August 7, 2014 (EDT)

Undo will revert the last edit, while rollback undoes all edits made by the last editor (so potentially several edits). If you undo an edit, you still have to patrol the reverted edit I believe. In regards to patrolling edits you see in need of patrolling, it is swell if you do patrol them, but you do not have to. Hope this helps a little! ~~SuperAlpaca (talk) 23:49, August 7, 2014 (EDT)

Expanding on SA's excellent answer, rolling back an edit is instant, and does not let you provide an edit summary. I typically only use roll backs for obvious vandalism, especially when an editor has made a series of vandalistic edits and I need to quickly revert them all. Otherwise, doing an undo with an edit summary is usually your best bet. Rolling back an edit does mark an edit as patrolled, I believe (unlike undoing, which SA mentioned). ~SuperHamster Talk 00:34, August 8, 2014 (EDT)

Regarding the patrolling, if you do happen to see unpatrolled edits (with the red !) while viewing the recent changes list, it is part of your responsibility as a patroller to check them out and either mark them as patrolled or rollback/undo malicious ones. However, as SA said, you don't have to make it a point to patrol every single edit and you shouldn't go out of your way to look for unpatrolled edits. --Jake 13:32, August 8, 2014 (EDT)

Hey Marcus - I believe that edits to the userspace no longer count towards the Honored Member count, sorry! This was changed a while back to keep the award focused on edits to articles, files, and other wiki content. I'll review the exact conditions with Jake and will update our page on that soon.

If you take a look at the bottom of Special:HonoredMembers, if will tell you exactly how many edits you have that count towards becoming an Honored Member, along with how many more you need. ~SuperHamster Talk 03:23, October 9, 2014 (EDT)

ItemList template questions

Hey there Kevin, I wanted to get some feedback on the ItemList template and ask a few questions. First off, the class "collapsible" that is applied to tables and "mw-collapsible" that is applied to divs to make them collapsible has a few annoying features and I was wondering if it's possible to modify the HTML/CSS code for these classes to fix them? The main issue is with the placement of the 'show'/'hide' buttons. In this table the show/hide button is not vertically centered; is it possible to change the vertical alignment of the button? In this table the button appears awkwardly above the header in the table's first column. This is because the button 'takes up' quite a bit of space before it and essentially 'pushes' the text to the line below it. Is there any way we can change this so that the button doesn't take up so much invisible space to its left? It might also be helpful to add just a bit of padding on the button's right side so it doesn't brush up against the side like it does in the navboxes (e.g. Template:Furniture).

While I'm at it, I also wanted to get your opinion on collapsible item lists in general. Do you think that it's awkward to have the show/hide button in the first column (like this)? Or do you think it's better above the table with a heading (like this)? And do you think nia.png is appropriate to use if we don't have an image of the item on-hand? Or should we just leave the field blank?

Lastly, I wanted to ask again about Nookipedia's YouTube account and what you wanted me to do in the meantime while Jake is (maybe... hopefully... ;P) looking into a solution for the ACGC video files. (talk) 17:15, October 18, 2014 (EDT)

Hey Sun! I really wish I could have an answer about editing the table HTML/CSS to accomplish what you want, but that's something I don't have experience with for MediaWiki. I'll have to discuss that with Jake - mind starting a discussion on the Bulletin Board between us? I'll send him a ping to join the discussion once done.

As for the preferred table, I like the latter a lot better. Having the title and the show/hide button on the right side is simpler and cleaner IMO, but that's my two cents.

I'd also support having an image placeholder for missing images, since it looks a bit awkward to have a mix of single- and multiple-line rows.

Main Page DLC Section Editable?

Hello, Eric Here! (new to Nookipedia, but enjoying it so far!)

Not a huge deal but I created my account to add to the DLC section on the Main Page for November (Scorpion Lamp) but I can't seem to edit that part. If this was deliberate to prevent vandalism I understand. Also I haven't gotten my confirmation email yet but I can of course wait on that. Thanks! This is an incredible reference tool and I use it just about every time I play New Leaf. Keep up the excellent work. Hey there Eric - welcome to the wiki, and sorry for the late reply! The DLC template is indeed protected, since it's on the Main Page and is shown to nearly all visitors. I've gone ahead and updated the DLC for December, so thanks for the reminder! In the future, feel free to contact me or another staff member if we forget to update it.

As for the confirmation email, be sure to check your spam folder. If it's not there, I do remember a few other instances of editors having problems with confirmation emails, so get back to me if you can't find it and I'll try to see what's going on. Do you think Nookipedia should have a vacation template? It would be helpful if we had a template so the community would know if a certain user wasn't going to be editing for some time. Yes, actually! When I first joined Nookipedia, one of the first things I did was tag images with licensing tags. At some point, SuperAlpaca was shocked to find out my tagging wasn't automated, as there were hundreds upon hundreds of images to tag...so I found a script from Wikipedia and brought it here at User:SuperHamster/vector.js. This script adds a button to the left of my username that, when clicked, replaces all the content of the page you are on with the 'game screenshot' licensing tag. Uploading a replacement image with a different MIME type

I'm trying to replace the current image of Flurry we have on file and the new image is .png while the previous image is .JPG. When I try to replace the old image I can't because their file types differ. I don't want to convert the .png to .JPG as we lose the transparent background in the process. Hey Sunmarsh - I'd upload the file under a new name (name.png), replace all the .jpg images with the .png, and then delete the .jpg. This is all assuming they're the same image. ~SuperHamster Talk 23:12, August 21, 2015 (EDT)

Bulletin Board problems

Hello. I've noticed two small problems on the bulletin boards. The 'Recent Status Updates' box is not functioning correctly for me. It shows out of date status updates (from Nov 4, 2014 to Jan 5, 2015) rather than the actual latest ones. Also, I can't start conversations, hence why I'm posting these issues here.

It wouldn't let me reply there, so I'll reply here. It definitely has something to do with moving TBB to a new server/database a few days ago, but I'm not currently aware of the exact issue. Can you change names of a file?

So recently, I uploaded a bunch of files of amiibo cards. I listed them as being North American. However, I've just learned that they are actually from Europe. Is therea way you can changed the name and summary of a file? Thanks.

Hey Heidy - yes! Admins and above can move files. It seems like a fair tool to give to Patrollers, however, so I will bring up with Jake the idea of granting Patrollers the ability to move files too. If you already linked the files, make sure after you're done moving, you delete the file redirects. Or, you can move files without leaving a file redirect behind, but make sure you update the image links or else the images won't show up in their respective pages. ™ 01:13, November 10, 2015 (EST)

Image names

How do I think of a good image name?

Try to come up with a short description of the image. For example, for File:Animal Crossing 382.JPG, you might name the file "Hobb's House NL.jpg". For File:HNI 0099.JPG, you might name it "Cobb Conversation NL.jpg". Hope this helps. ~SuperHamster Talk 21:16, December 22, 2015 (EST)

Question (2)

How do you know that an IP address is an open proxy? Red (talk) 13:20, February 16, 2016 (EST)

I did say proxy, but I think the more accurate term is VPN. I used a geolocator tool (such as this one) to find the IP's ISP. The particular IP I blocked has DigitalOcean as an ISP. DigitalOcean is a server host, which led me to believe that the server was being used as a VPN. I'm not 100% sure of my analysis, and I could be wrong, but regardless the IP did show multiple users that have vandalized from it which is what led to my block. ~SuperHamster Talk 23:07, February 16, 2016 (EST)

Quick Questions

Hey Superhamster! I just had two things I needed help with: First one is a bit stupid on my behalf, but how do I mark edits done by other users as patrolled? I can see the red exclamation marks in the Recent Changes, and I have clicked on the specific edits to see if anything is there, but I couldn't see anything along the lines of "patrol edit". Second thing is, I decided that now that I'm a member of staff, I should have a more proper signature, and I have looked on the pages involving signatures, but I'm totally stumped. Hey there! Not a dumb question at all.

• To mark an edit as patrolled, look at the edit difference. A link ("[Mark as patrolled]") should appear on the right side beneath the edit's header (starting with "Revision as of...").
• To modify your signature, first head to Special:Preferences and check the box that says "Treat signature as wikitext". Prettying up your signature takes a bit of HTML/CSS knowledge. If you'd like to change the color of text, you can use the span tag. Check out the following code you can use:

[[User:ZCJigglypuff|<span style="color:#F781F3;">ZCJigglypuff</span>]]([[User talk:ZCJigglypuff|Talk]])

That code will produce this: ZCJigglypuff (Talk)

#F781F3 is the HTML color code for the shade of pink I selected. You're free to change it to whatever color you want; you can use an HTML color table (like this one) to find the codes for different colors. You can also use wikimarkup and other HTML tags to do things like bold your name, italicize it, etc.

Staff Activity

Hey Hamster! I just wanted to quickly ask something. I've noticed a few members of our staff including Heidy, Pachisu and Mario haven't been on the site for a long time ( Pachisu has been, albeit very infrequently), but they're still marked as "Active" on the Patroller, Bureaucrat, etc type of pages. If it's alright with you, I think changing their activity status to "Inactive" or "Around" would help new members/visitors know who to ask. Sorry if this didn't make sense, I'm very tired today! Just thought I would add that you should probably make sure you log out of your account and close any open browser tabs when you are not using the site. That anon is editing from one of the IP addresses we have on your account record, meaning that they are likely on the same network as you. So no one else can access the accounts and cause disruption; it would also interfere with the IP record of the account, and it's a matter of principle that only one person should have access to every account. Featured Fanart Question?

Hey there! I'm not sure if this is an okay question to ask, but I am curious about the Featured Fanart section on the Front Page. Can other Nookipedia users submit their own Animal Crossing fanart as well, or do we sumbit art from a different website? The art is currently being curated by me (I search the web for fanart that catches my eye, and ask artists if they're interested in being featured). What I think we could do is create a team of users to work with me on finding fanart. What do you think? Ah, we changed that (temporarily) to let Sunmarsh quickly upload files with the license and source information placed in the Summary field, instead of him having to choose a license from the dropdown and then going back to add the source in another edit. This should be temporary until we have a better system (such as have a new field in the upload wizard that lets uploaders place a source into the license). I don't think it should be a big problem in the meantime since we don't see too many uploads, but if it becomes a problem we can re-enable it. ~SuperHamster Talk 15:37, January 16, 2017 (EST)

A few things.

Sometimes when I browse I see coding of the website that is visible impairing my ability to edit. I think the site may need to be locked until the issue is resolved, there seems to be a glitch in the code. I also logged out and the problem persisted. As far as I know it seems to happen randomly. Regarding the site glitch, can you provide more details so that we can diagnose the issue? Are you on a computer or a phone? What page(s) does it happen on? Can you describe the glitch? Is it an issue with the layout, or an advertisement?

As for YouTube videos, you can use Template:Youtube to embed a video anywhere. If you have any questions about how to use the template, feel free to ask. We don't have a limit on video embeds in the userspace, just make sure they're appropriate for the wiki (nothing offensive, no gore, no profanity, etc.).

Thanks for the username change, regarding the glitch it happens on mobile, as I use a Wii U to edit. The glitch I found out was no advertisements are shown, unless I was promoted when I was gone idk. There is also the text was like when you are on Wikia and have adblocks on, it was as for the glitch, the ads wasn't shown anywhere, the texture glitch mainly happens in the special namespace. However as I use mobile I don't have Adblock or any of that junk. Also thanks for clearing about the YouTube stuff, I was going to put music videos from John Denver and other artists. Ahh, interesting, thanks for pointing this glitch out! I think I found the problem you are experiencing on mobile: on special pages, the ads sometimes appear on top of the page content. We'll take a look and try to fix this ASAP.

For the YouTube template, you put the video's ID. If you look at the URL of the YouTube video, you should see something like watch?v=asdf1234567. Whatever string that comes after the equal sign is what goes into the template (e.g. {{Youtube|asdf1234}}. ~SuperHamster Talk 20:15, April 9, 2018 (EDT)

I got a question

I was going through each villager, and I notice that in the Happy Home Designer house infobox, some of the villagers have their personality included in the Type box next to its Species, like for example, Lazy Cat. But then there are some where only its species is shown. So my question is this, should the type box have both species and personality or just the species? I'm not sure which is best. Hey sorry for the inexperience with this, but can you show me how images work? It's something I never had to really do over on SmashWiki. I tired just putting File:So&So.jpg in, that didn't work. Hi! In the future, please sign all posts with four tildes (like this: ~~~~). For broken formatting and templates, here are some examples:

• In this edit, you tried to create a redirect to MEOW Coupons, but you need to clear the rest of the content for redirects to work.
• In this edit, you tried to add a caption to the image, but that's not how captions work. The text you added appeared at the beginning of the article.
• Here you accidentally broke the clear template when removing the stub template.

Individually these aren't a big deal, but you are making a lot of edits, and making a lot of mistakes like these means that other editors will have to spend a lot of time cleaning them up. new user

Alright SuperHamster, I'm the one who have been trying to edit a lot of pages for the villagers here. I didn't see your first message because I was busy correcting Japanese and a few Korean mistakes in the transliterations, and today is the first time I've ever edited (something)pedia pages. So I didn't even know others could block me, and even less sending me messages. My mother died suddenly from a stroke 2 days ago, Monday, and I'm on lockdown like the rest of the world because of the Corona virus, so I don't just have absolutely nothing to do with my time, I'm desperate to keep myself busy by doing a bit of productive work, so as to keep my mind off my mother, who was my only light, my only friend, my only real reason to stay alive. On top of this I am autistic, so I can't even go out in public without people looking at me as if I'm joke on legs walking down the streets, and going for a simple walk is not even an option for me. I get that you don't want me to add transliterations to Asian names for the villagers. I accept that. But I have a lot of knowledge on the Japanese, Korean and Chinese languages, and I just want to help adding info and/or correcting mistakes on your pages that has to do with those languages. I need to keep myself busy. I need something to do. I know no one gives a shit about me and what I'm going through. And I don't expect you to, because you don't know me, and you probably have problems on your own, perhaps more and worse than mine. But I love Animal Crossing. It helps me to accept myself, my disability, my losses, my lies, my mistakes, my flaws, everything. I just wanted to contribute to this site, because I love the franchise and the games have helped me in countless indescripable ways throughout my lonely life. For context, we do add latinized names to villager articles, except they go into the "Names in other languages" section at the bottom (for example, see Bob's page). You don't have to be any particular rank, but if you're applying for patroller, I recommend you get the trustee rank first. Of course, you also have to meet the other requirements (200 mainspace edits) as well. For admisistrator, you should be the patroller rank, and for bureaucrat, you should be an administrator. Applications aren't accepted for the director rank. If you application fails, you can reapply after 90 days of the application closing. If you're nominating someone else, you don't have to be any particular rank to nominate them. The same rules apply. ~ Vivian (talk) 10:20, June 14, 2021 (EDT)

new villagers

Hey there! I saw you reverted my edits on Petri and Sasha; I don't want to undo edits done by an administrator, but do I want to provide the evidence to ya. In the case of Petri, it seems clear: their Italian name (Petronella) is a clear feminine name, whereas from their other names it is not really possible to tell as they.. aren't real names. For Sasha, most of their names are unisex, but their Japanese name (Mitchell) and their German name (Gerrit) are exclusively masculine names. Additionally, on the numbering of amiibo cards, the order alternates between male and female which is in accordance with Sasha being male and Petri being female. New to Nookipedia and have a few questions

Hi- I'm new here to Nookipedia and have a few questions if you don't mind :)

1) I found out that you're the leader for the Museum Project and I would like to help out. Do I need to sign up or anything? Or is it just something anyone can do?

2) How can I find out the articles that need to be edited or changed? Do other users ask for help on The Roost? Or is it like you go on a random article see if it needs editing

3) Is it ok that i've only played a few animal crossing games and i'm still apart of Nookipedia? I don't know EVERYTHING about EVERY GAME. I've only played New Leaf, New Horizons, & Happy Home Designer. Can I still participate?

Not SuperHamster, and over a week late, but still here to answer your questions:

1) You don't need to sign up; if a project has a list of users, you can just add your name onto the list.

2) You can look on our to-do list on the main page for articles that need editing. You can also use the "random page" idea you mentioned earlier, if you wish.

3) Of course! You don't need to own - or have played - every game in the series when joining. I joined this wiki when I only had New Horizons and Pocket Camp. :P

Hello, which game would you be referring to? Ozzie doesn't have the leaf umbrella in New Horizons, but he should for New Leaf, according to the New Leaf save editor. Bots are essentially programs that you can set up to perform specific and often repetitive tasks. Bots can do things like mass-move pages, fix common spelling mistakes, or generate articles. As an example, we used bots to mass-generate all the thousands of item pages on Nookipedia. Bots require technical knowledge and oftentimes some programming. Nookipedia's content is licensed under the CC BY-SA 3.0 license. You can re-use Nookipedia's content on other wikis, as long as those wikis are also licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0 or 4.0, and as long as you provide proper attribution (meaning that you credit and link back to Nookipedia). Tom Nook protection
