Trading (conjectural name[nb 1]) is a gameplay mechanic in the Animal Crossing series where players trade goods to other players online. In earlier Animal Crossing games, trading is done through secret code or through visiting one's town via their memory card. Payment is done either through another good or through Bells. In New Horizons, Nook Miles Ticket are an additional commodity used for trading. Other commodities include real-money transactions, though the practice violates Nintendo Account User Agreement.[1] Trading can also be done for free, where one player can obtain a good without payment. In Pocket Camp, player can set up their own Market Box for friends to purchase goods. They can also provide special Gifts that contain furniture or clothing, most of them coming from Fortune Cookies.

Goods offered by trading include the trading of furniture, clothing, art, fossils, DIY recipes, flora, materials, tools, villagers, or services such as island visits.

An alternative method of trading is cataloging, where the player simply grabs the item and immediately drops it in order to store that item and its variants in their catalog. This method is useful for players wanting to finish their catalog in a shorter timeframe.

Trading became prominent with the rise of forums like Animal Crossing Community, and would gradually rise in popularity until the release of New Horizons, where trading exploded in popularity. Nookazon, a site founded in 2020, is one of the most notable and popular trading sites for Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The rise of trading however also resulted in the rise of scams in the Animal Crossing community, where transactions for a trade is not provided from either parties.
