Foxes are a species in the Animal Crossing series. In the real world, foxes are a genus of the canidae family, which also includes dogs and wolves. Much like the tanuki, in Japanese folklore, foxes (known as kitsune) hold mythical status. Mythical kitsune are said to be both benevolent and mischievous, but all have the ability to shapeshift into human form, which can be used to deceive or possess humans. Redd is currently the only fox in the Animal Crossing series, and he has appeared in every game so far, as well as having a role in 🎬 Gekijōban Doubutsu no Mori.
The villagers Chief and Audie have orange fur and somewhat resemble foxes, but both are listed as wolves. The final line of Chief's e-Reader card letter references his fox-like appearance, stating "I'm no fox!" Audie's default catchphrase, "foxtrot," similarly references her fox-like appearance.
