Cats are a species in the Animal Crossing series who appear both as villagers and as special characters. All of them have pointed ears and slender tails. In the real world, cats are a domesticated animal commonly kept as house pets, much like dogs. Although cats are not the only species to appear simultaneously as both villagers and special characters, the two types share an identical base model, while others, such as the dog special characters, tend to have completely different designs from their normal villager counterparts.
Twenty-six cat villagers have appeared in the series so far, along with five cat special characters; this makes cats the most abundant species, not counting the bears added with the bear cubs, which equals thirty-four villagers. Out of the cat villagers, fifteen are female and eleven are male, making it a predominantly female species. Of these, six are peppy, five are snooty, four are lazy, four are jock, three are normal, two are cranky, one is smug, and one is big sister.
Out of the cat villagers, only Meow and Pierre have not reappeared since Doubutsu no Mori e+, and additionally, Felyne is missing from Animal Crossing: New Horizons. All of the cats who appear in New Horizons also appear in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. Out of all the villagers that made their debut in Doubutsu no Mori, the cat is the only species to not have any cut villagers reappear in the Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo update.
