Current Version:
Ver. 1.3.0 (Released July 3, 2020)

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is regularly updated with new content and special events. Unlike previous games, most events do not exist in the game's data until they are added through an update. These events are not available to experience in the game until the first real-world date on which it occurs, therefore time traveling cannot be exploited until the update has been installed. An online date verification is required to experience the event for the first time, at which point they will reoccur offline indefinitely.

Online multiplayer can only be participated in if the most recent update is installed. The version number is displayed on the title screen and when talking to Orville about multiplayer functions.

The first major update for the game added multiple items as part of a cross-promotion with Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. It also added Zipper T. Bunny, the Bunny Day event, and a matching series of furniture and clothing. The game's second major update added Leif, Redd, Rover, Cyrus and Reese to the game, as well as an art gallery expansion for the Museum and four new events: Nature Day, May Day, International Museum Day, and Wedding Season.

20px April Free Update
  • Adds Leif, who runs a pop-up gardening shop that sells bushes and flowers
  • Adds Redd who operates Jolly Redd's Treasure Trawler, a ship which sells furniture and art

  • Adds a second-stage upgrade for the Museum, introducing an art gallery exhibit
    • The player must donate one work of art to Blathers in order to trigger the construction process
  • Adds multiple new seasonal events:
  • Adds Coral Nook Inc. Aloha Shirt, Green Nook Inc. Aloha Shirt, and Bell-Bag Rug as available redemption items from the Nook Stop
  • Lowers the savings interest rate from 0.5% to 0.05%
    • All players will receive a letter informing them of the change, with a present containing a Bell-Bag Rug as an apology
  • Outdoor stereos can now work independently of each other, instead of all sharing the same power state and playing the same music
    • As a result of this change, all outdoor stereos will be switched off when the update is installed
  • Widespread adjustment of bug spawn rates:
    • All bugs now have the same chance to spawn in each month in which they are set to appear. Prior to this update, certain bugs would have a higher or lower chance of spawning during particular months compared to the other months in which they appear. Specific bugs have had their individual spawn rates adjusted for gameplay balance:
  • Rare Flowers Island Removed
  • Rare Flowers/Big Fish Island Removed
  • Short River/Pond Island increased to 9.68% (+0.68%)
  • Short River Island increased to 9.68% (+0.68%)

  • Fixes an issue where a villager could move in from a friend's island but not appear, and attempting to enter their house informs the player that they have moved out.
    • The affected villager will be completely removed from the island after the update is installed, and their plot will become vacant again.
1.1.4
April 6, 2020[1]
  • Fixed an issue where Flick would give a different model of insect when asked to make a model of the scarab beetle.
    • After the software is updated to Ver. 1.1.4, if Flick is given the required number of scarab beetles again, you will receive the correct model.
  • Adjusted the appearance rate of some Bunny Day eggs through April 11, with eggs being easier to find on Bunny Day itself (April 12).
1.1.3
April 3, 2020[1]
  • Addressed an issue where balloons would no longer fly over the island under certain circumstances.
1.1.2
April 2, 2020[1]
  • Fixed an issue where an animal you’ve invited to move from another island doesn’t actually move, leaving the plot of land allocated for them to move to sold and unoccupied.
    • After the software is updated to Ver. 1.1.2, the sold plot of land will revert to being available, and a new animal will become able to move there again.
Note: The animal that was originally invited to move to your island when the issue occurred will not return to their original island, nor will their plan to move to your island be carried out.
  • Fixed an issue where a request from Tom Nook for the Resident Representative to find a plot of land for new residents disappears.
    • After the software is updated to Ver. 1.1.2, if the island is developed to a certain point (Nook's Cranny is either under construction or completed), the next time the Resident Representative plays the game, a special event will trigger during the island-wide broadcast and the story will move forward.
  • Fixed an issue where, after deleting a resident, it becomes impossible to move their house and/or other structures.
    • After the software is updated to Ver. 1.1.2, it will once more become possible to request that these structures be moved.
  • Fixed an issue where both Nook Miles and Bells are subtracted when you use Nook Miles Tickets to go on a Mystery Tour and purchase an item from Wilbur.
  • Other issues are now resolved.
