The novel painting (ざんしんなめいが zanshin na meiga?) is a furniture item in Doubutsu no Mori and Dòngwù Sēnlín.

In Doubutsu no Mori, the novel painting can be obtained from Crazy Redd's Furniture Emporium for  1,960 Bells, a treasure hunt, or trees when the player has good luck. It does not have any color for the purpose of fêng shui.

In Doubutsu no Mori, this item appears in the homes of Butch, Egbert, Monique, and Nosegay.

In Dòngwù Sēnlín, this item appears in the homes of Butch, Egbert, Monique, and Nosegay.

For villagers who have this item placed on the floor in their house, there is a chance that the villager will gift it to the player.

While the item still appears in Doubutsu no Mori+, it is unobtainable through normal means; it could only be obtained if the player used the Data Moving Service to transfer save data from Doubutsu no Mori that contained the item, and it does not appear in the catalog. If the player tries to donate the novel painting to the museum in Doubutsu no Mori+, Blathers will treat it as a non-donatable item.

Version differences

Attempted donation in Doubutsu no Mori+

If the player attempts to donate the novel painting to the museum in Doubutsu no Mori+, Blathers says a unique piece of dialog explaining that while it is a work of art, the museum has no room for it. Despite the item being removed in Animal Crossing, this dialog was fully translated and remains unused:

"Hmmm...yes. Ah. Well. There's no doubt this is <item name>, wot... But to be perfectly honest, there's simply no place for this within our collection. You see... Blimey, this is awkward! You see, it's not included on our list of must-have masterpieces. Which paintings we collect, and where they're displayed... It's all been decided. We just have no more space! It's my superiors, you see. There's absolutely nothing that I can I do about it. I'm truly, awfully sorry! I hate to do anything to curb your enthusiasm, but... My wings are tied, you see. I must return this to you. Now, personally, I believe this is a very valuable work of art. Priceless! One for the ages, eh wot? It would be wonderful if you would deign to display it in your home for the viewing pleasure of others."

The Japanese dialog from Doubutsu no Mori+ is also Doubutsu no Mori e+ and remains unused.

Leftover dummy item

The dummy model used by unused items in Animal Crossing.

In Animal Crossing, the novel painting is still leftover in the game data as a dummy item, unobtainable without gameplay modification or glitches. It has the unused name "novel painting" and uses the dummy model, a white triangle with red Japanese text reading ダミー (damī, dummy). Its name was also translated to other languages in the European version of Animal Crossing, with the name "cuadro original" in Spanish, "toile originale" in French, "Marc" in German, and "quadro romantico" in Italian.

The item remains unused in Doubutsu no Mori e+, where, as with all dummy items in that game, its name appears as "かぐ?" (kagu?, furniture?) in the player's inventory. However, when dropped on the ground outside, its name from Doubutsu no Mori+ is shown. The item appears as the same dummy model but cannot be placed down in the player's house if in their inventory.
