The term headgear refers to clothing that can be worn on top of a player's head, generally covering his or her hair.

The way headgear has been handled has changed significantly over the span the series. In Animal Crossing, players were forced to wear a hat which matches the design on their clothes. If the player's character is a boy, he wears a Viking-styled hat, while female characters donned a cone-styled hat.

Animal Crossing: Wild World introduced the general foundation upon which all further games have based their system on. The headgear system was extended to allow several different types of hats to be used. This greatly increased the fashion sense of the series. In addition to this, players could also go hatless, and flaunt their hair. To accomadate this, hairstyles were also added; available through the hair salon, Shampoodle.

In Animal Crossing: City Folk, the system retained most, if not all, qualities of its predecessor, but extended it even further by integrating it with the Mii system of the Nintendo Wii by allowing a player to choose the face of a Mii as a "mask", which is worn completely over the face of the player's character. The use of Mii Masks could be arranged at Shampoodle.
