The damselfly is a bug in the Animal Crossing series. The damselfly first appeared in Animal Crossing: New Horizons and was later added to Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. It is similar to a dragonfly, but unlike the darner dragonfly, red dragonfly, and banded dragonfly, it only appears in winter.

In the games that the damselfly appears in, it is a common bug that the player can encounter, and can be found flying. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it can be caught from late fall to the end of winter.

Donating to the museum[edit]

In New Horizons[edit]

Blathers has this to say about the damselfly:

"The colorful damselfly is similar to its cousin, the dragonfly, though it tends to be smaller and thinner. But don't let the delicate looks fool you! Much like the dragonfly, the damselfly is a ruthless predator. It loves to catch flies midair and eat them, and has been known to snack on spiders it plucks from the web! In short, it is not a dinner guest I would recommend... And it is not a menu I could keep down."

Once donated, the damselfly is found in the main room of the bug exhibit, flying around near the waterfall at the northern end of the room. It shares this area with the red dragonfly, darner dragonfly, and banded dragonfly.

Real-world information[edit]

Damselflies are insects of the suborder Zygoptera in the order Odonata. They are similar to dragonflies, which constitute the other odonatan suborder, Anisoptera, but are smaller, have slimmer bodies, and most species fold the wings along the body when at rest, unlike dragonflies which hold the wings flat and away from the body. An ancient group, damselflies have existed since at least the Lower Permian, and are found on every continent except Antarctica.
