Sanrio Company, Ltd. (株式会社サンリオ Kabushikigaisha Sanrio) is a Japanese media company that has partnered with Nintendo to add crossover content in the Animal Crossing series. Beginning in Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo, villagers and items based on Sanrio's Hello Kitty, Pompompurin, Little Twin Stars, Cinnamoroll, My Melody, and Keroppi franchises have appeared. Sanrio crossover content has also appeared in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Villagers
The following six villagers are based on Sanrio franchises:
- Rilla – A peppy gorilla based on the Hello Kitty franchise.
- Marty – A lazy bear cub based on the Pompompurin franchise.
- Étoile – A normal sheep based on the Little Twin Stars franchise.
- Chai – A peppy elephant based on the Cinnamoroll franchise.
- Chelsea – A normal deer based on the My Melody franchise.
- Toby – A smug rabbit based on the Keroppi franchise.
amiibo cards
Each of the Sanrio villagers have an amiibo card as part of the Sanrio Collaboration Series. The series was initially released in Europe and Japan alongside the Welcome amiibo update.[citation needed] In January 2021, coinciding with the announcement of the 1.7.0 Free Update, Nintendo announced that the Sanrio Collaboration Series would return to retailers in March. They were rereleased on March 26 in North America[1] and Japan[2] and on April 8 in the UK.[3] This was the first time the cards were released in North America.
Appearances
In Welcome amiibo
The six Sanrio villagers are introduced in Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo. If their amiibo cards are scanned, they can be invited to the campground or asked to move in. Their RVs contain items based on their franchises.
In New Horizons
In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the Cinnamoroll poster, My Melody poster, Kiki & Lala poster, Pompompurin poster, Kerokerokeroppi poster, and Hello Kitty poster can be obtained from Nook Shopping after Chai, Chelsea, Étoile, Marty, Toby, and Rilla's amiibo cards, respectively, are scanned in Photopia.
While initially absent from the game, the Sanrio villagers and items returned in the 1.9.0 Free Update on March 18, 2021.[4] The items can be unlocked for purchase and the villagers can move to the player's island if their amiibo cards are scanned.
In Pocket Camp
The Sanrio villagers and items were added to Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp for a limited time in 2019 as part of the Sanrio Characters Collection. The first collection, released on July 11, included Chai, Rilla, and their respective items;[5] the second, released on July 22, included Chelsea, Marty, and their respective items;[6] and the third, released on August 9, included Toby, Étoile, and their respective items.[7] The characters and items were available until September 2, 2019.[8]
A follow-up to the Sanrio Characters Collection, known as the Sanrio Characters Collection 2021, was released on March 26, 2021. It added new Sanrio-themed items and featured the return of the previously released Sanrio items and villagers.[9][10] The collection ended on May 10, 2021.
