Tom Nook explaining island backup

Island backup is a feature in Animal Crossing: New Horizons that allows the player can back up their island to their Nintendo Account to be restored in the event that the Nintendo Switch system the island is stored on is lost or damaged. This feature was added in the 1.4.0 Summer Update (Wave 2) and requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Since New Horizons does not support standard Nintendo Switch Online cloud saves, this is the only way to back up or restore New Horizons save data.

Island backup can be enabled in the Settings menu, which is accessed pressing - Button.svg on the game's title screen. Afterward, the island save data is periodically backed up to the cloud, with the latest backup date and time displayed on the title screen. Restoring an island backup requires contacting Nintendo Customer Support; once done, holding - Button.svg as the game boots causes Tom Nook to appear and give the player the option to restore any islands that are backed up to their Nintendo Account.
