The Legend of Zelda is a series of adventure video games developed by Nintendo that has crossover content in the Animal Crossing series. Items based on The Legend of Zelda first appeared in Doubutsu no Mori and have appeared in all subsequent games except Pocket Camp and New Horizons. Four villagers based on characters from The Legend of Zelda series appear exclusively in Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo.
Villagers[edit]
The following four villagers are based on The Legend of Zelda series and appear exclusively in Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo:
- W. Link – A smug wolf based on Link's wolf form from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. He can be summoned if the Link, Zelda, or Young Link amiibo figures from the Super Smash Bros. series, or the Wolf Link, Link (Archer), Link (Twilight Princess), Link (Skyward Sword), Link (Link's Awakening) or Link (Tears of the Kingdom) amiibo figures from The Legend of Zelda series are scanned.
- Medli – A normal bird based on Medli from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. She can be summoned if the Toon Link amiibo figure from the Super Smash Bros. series, or the Toon Link (The Wind Waker), Zelda (The Wind Waker), Zelda (Breath of the Wild), or Zelda and Loftwing amiibo figures from The Legend of Zelda series are scanned.
- Ganon – A cranky pig based on Ganon. He can be summoned if the Ganondorf amiibo figure from the Super Smash Bros. series, or the Link (The Legend of Zelda), Guardian, Bokoblin, or Ganondorf (Tears of the Kingdom) amiibo figures from The Legend of Zelda series are scanned.
- Epona – A peppy horse based on Epona. She can be summoned if the Sheik amiibo figure from the Super Smash Bros. series, or the Link (Ocarina of Time), Link (Rider), or Link (Majora's Mask) amiibo figures from The Legend of Zelda series are scanned.
Appearances[edit]
In Animal Crossing[edit]
There are three Zelda items in all of the first-generation games: the Master Sword, Anju's shirt, and Kaffe's shirt. The former is the sacred sword that appears throughout the Zelda series, and the latter two are based on the clothing worn by Anju and Kafei, respectively, in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.
Additionally, in Doubutsu no Mori+ and Animal Crossing there are two unobtainable NES games named Legend of Zelda. In Doubutsu no Mori+, one contains the cartridge version of The Legend of Zelda and one contains the Famicom Disk System version. In Animal Crossing, one contains the international cartridge version and the other (the leftover Disk System version from Doubutsu no Mori+) appears identical to the NES item and crashes the game when interacted with.
There are also several references to the series in dialog in Animal Crossing:
- When talking to Gulliver, he can say he that he left his goldfish Helen "heartbroken in Hyrule." Hyrule is the kingdom in which most Zelda games take place.
- One interlude in Kapp'n's Song also mentions Hyrule, with Kapp'n asking the player, "Ye ever spend the night in a Hyrulian prison?"
- When managing Animal Island Game Boy Advance data, Kapp'n may say "Why, what in the name o' Jabu-Jabu's belly?" This is a reference to the dungeon of the same name in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
- The catch quote for the loach is "I caught a loach! You don't suppose it's Hylian, do you?". This is a reference to the Hylian Loach, a fish in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
- If the player interacts with a storage unit in a villager's house, a random message will appear. One of them is "You found 100 Rupees! But you can't use them here." Rupees are the currency in the Zelda series.
There are three Animal Crossing-e Design Cards based on the Zelda series: D07 Hero's Tunic, D08 Triforce Tile, and PR NES Link. The Hero's Tunic card was also released as #D02 in Doubutsu no Mori Card-e+ Series 1.
In Wild World[edit]
There are two Zelda items in Animal Crossing: Wild World: the returning Master Sword, and the new Triforce.
In City Folk[edit]
There are four Zelda items in Animal Crossing: City Folk: both the Master Sword and Triforce return from Wild World, while two clothing items based on Link—the hero's clothes and hero's cap—are added.
In New Leaf[edit]
In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, there are nine Zelda items that can be earned through fortune cookies.
In the Welcome amiibo update for New Leaf, four Zelda villagers were added. If their corresponding amiibo figures are scanned, they can be invited to the campground or asked to move in. Their RVs contain items based on the series.
In New Horizons[edit]
While no Zelda crossover content appears in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, one quote during island evaluation is "It's a place I've been quietly watching. It's a secret to everybody. I don't want it to be famous." "It's a secret to everybody" is a reference to a quote by friendly Red Moblins found in secret caves, who gives Link Rupees.
