Resetting is a gameplay mechanic in the Animal Crossing series utilized when the system is either turned off or its reset button is pressed, causing any unsaved progress to be lost. In all games prior to Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Mr. Resetti appears when the player begins the play session after resetting, giving a long lecture on the cons of resetting the game. After multiple resets in Animal Crossing, Animal Crossing: City Folk, or Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Don Resetti will appear in place of Mr. Resetti, who merely gives the player a warning rather than a full rant.

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Resetti only appears once, unless the Resetti Surveillance Center public works project is built, at a cost of 368,000 Bells. Until the Center is built, Isabelle will take the place of Mr. Resetti and remind the player about saving when the game is reset.

The reset mechanic is not used in Animal Crossing: New Horizons due to the game's auto-save behavior. It is possible to quit the game without saving from the Nintendo Switch home screen to attempt to reset actions since the last auto-saved state, but there is no warning (from any character) when the player begins their next session.

Trivia

A player with the face texture of a gyroid
  • In Animal Crossing, if the player visits another town and resets the game, the next time their save is loaded, the texture for their face is that of a gyroid. This effect ends the next time the player saves their game. Additionally, when resetting in another town, all items and Bells in the player's pockets disappear.
  • During online play, the player will be forced to reset if they get disconnected. However, Mr. Resetti will not appear when the game is reset during online play.
  • When a player resets, lights and sirens go off in the Resetti Surveillance Center. This can be witnessed by the player in Doubutsu no Mori e+, Animal Crossing: City Folk, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
