During summer (the second half of July to September) it is possible to get a tan. By standing in a clear sun long enough, the player's skin will go up through levels. There are 5 different levels, each one having a darker tan than the other. The tan, however, will appear the following day.

The player's skin tone is a customizable feature that determines how light or dark the player's skin is. In the main series games prior to NH, all players start with a pale skin tone, and it can only be changed by tanning, a process in which standing in the sun for prolonged periods of time darkens the player's skin tone. Beginning in HHD, skin tone is selected by the player at the beginning of the game and can be changed later in a menu.

One can get a darker tan in the summer by walking anywhere in the sun for long enough. If players have the darkest tan (Level 5), it will stay Level 5. But if they take a break and avoid the sun, the tan disappears a bit every day. Also, a tan begins to disappear on rainy or cloudy days. There are five levels of a tan, each one darker than the last.

In PG, the player can tan by staying in the sun during summer for prolonged periods of time. Because Animal Island is always set in summer, the player can also tan there all year. Tanning can be prevented if the player is holding an umbrella.

The player can get a tan from July 16th to September 15th. The game has to have a clear sky outside, and it must be during daylight hours (when the clock on the upper left-hand corner of the screen has a full picture of the sun, which should be between 8 AM and 5 PM, depending on the time of year). The only thing that stops a tan from appearing is an umbrella.

A tip for knowing if one is actually tanning is to make a plain pattern that is skin colored (Palette 10/16) and wear it as a shirt, in the sun. If the character's skin is becoming darker than the shirt, there is a tan, and it will becomes more noticeable after approximately 2 to 3 hours.

To remove a tan, the player should go out with an umbrella or avoid daylight. Drastic measures include Time Traveling or staying off the game for long periods of time. In WW and CF, hats are unable to prevent tanning, but in NL, wide-brimmed hats have been proven to prevent tanning.

The skin tone selection menu in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

The player's skin tone is a customizable feature that determines how light or dark the player's skin is. In the main series games prior to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, all players start with a pale skin tone, and it can only be changed by tanning, a process in which standing in the sun for prolonged periods of time darkens the player's skin tone. Beginning in Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, skin tone is selected by the player at the beginning of the game and can be changed later in a menu.

Appearances[edit]

In Animal Crossing[edit]

In Animal Crossing, the player can tan by staying in the sun during summer for prolonged periods of time. Because Animal Island is always set in summer, the player can also tan there all year. Tanning can be prevented if the player is holding an umbrella.

In Wild World, City Folk, and New Leaf[edit]

A player with a tan in Animal Crossing: City Folk.

In Animal Crossing: Wild World, Animal Crossing: City Folk, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf, the player can tan by staying in the sun during the summer, from July 16 to September 15, for prolonged periods of time. Their skin will darken by the following day. In Wild World and City Folk there are six skin tones, and in New Leaf there are eight. Tanning can be prevented if the player is holding an umbrella or wearing certain headwear. If the player stays out of the sun, or when summer is over, their tan fades away each day.

In New Leaf, similar to Animal Island in Animal Crossing, the player can travel to Tortimer Island to tan outside of the summer season.

In New Horizons[edit]

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the player chooses between eight skin tones at the beginning of the game, and their skin tone can be changed at any time by using a mirror. As a result of this, tanning does not appear in New Horizons. The 1.5.0 Fall Update, an item known as the Body-Paint Costume Tips, which can be purchased from the Nook Miles Redemption, was added. This item unlocks four Halloween-themed body paint options, which are treated as skin tones.

In Happy Home Designer and Pocket Camp[edit]

The player setting their skin tone, among other aspects of their face, in Happy Home Designer.

In Happy Home Designer, the player's skin tone, face, and hairstyle can be customized at the beginning of the game. They can freely change their skin tone afterwards upon unlocking the Styling Machine.

In Pocket Camp, the player is able to customize their skin tone, face, and hairstyle in the tutorial and in the Settings menu.
