Tours are minigames in Animal Crossing: New Leaf that are accessible from Tortimer Island. Hosted by Tortimer, tours can be registered for by speaking to Leilani in the island's lobby and sitting in one of the chairs in the waiting area. Each tour has an objective that must be completed within a time limit. Completing the objective rewards the player with medals, the currency of Tortimer Island that can be used at the Souvenir Shop.

Some tours task the player with doing something, such as catching bugs or popping balloons, as many times as possible within the time limit; the more the player does, the more medals they receive. Others have the player complete a task as fast as possible; the more time remaining when the objective is complete, the more medals received. Each tour has a difficulty rating of one, two, or three stars; higher difficulties reward more medals.

There are a total of 64 tours. Each day, Leilani lets the player choose from a random selection of four tours from each available difficulty. By default, only one-star tours are available; two-star tours are unlocked once the player has earned a total of 50 medals, and three-star tours are unlocked once the player has earned a total of 120 medals.

There are 12 categories of tours; all tours in a category generally follow the same rules and have similar objectives. Nine of the categories have three tours: one for each difficulty; each one has the same or a similar objective, but with slight changes to the minigame to make it more difficult. Bug-catching, fishing, and diving tours are different, with each category having 11 to 14 tours. The objectives vary between these tours, with some requiring the player to catch any creature, creatures from a specified list, or creatures adding up to a Bell total.

The maps for most tours are randomly generated and are similar to that of a town. Labyrinth and hammer tours feature a smaller, rectangular map that is surrounded by a perimeter of bushes. Certain fishing tours, all diving tours, and all item-matching tours take place on an island surrounded by sea on all sides; the item-matching island is also surrounded by a perimeter of rocks. Most tours take place during the day, but some creature-catching tours take place at night depending on what creatures need to be caught.

If there are any items in the player's pockets when going on a tour, they are automatically sold at the same price as Leila's market. The player begins each tour with any tools or items needed already in their inventory. Additional tools can optionally be rented from Lloid, who appears in the starting area in most tours. Tools can only be rented if they are not required for that tour. Any items picked up outside of the main objective, such as flowers and fruit picked up from the ground, can be kept after the tour. Additionally, in tours where the player can rent a net and fishing rod, any bugs and fish caught are kept. If the player unequips clothing items or removes Bells from their wallet and drops them on the ground during a tour, they are lost permanently after the tour is over.

For non-creature-catching tours, the same bugs that are available on Tortimer Island during the day are available during tours, subject to the presence of spawn requirements such as trees or flowers on the map. The sea fish are also the same as on Tortimer Island, and for maps that have rivers or ponds, the available freshwater fish are the same as those found between 9 AM and 4 PM in the summer in town.

Internally, each tour is divided into one of 12 categories. While the individual tours have official names, the categories do not, so conjectural names based on the activities performed are used here.

Hide-and-seek

Easy Hide-and-Seek Tour

In these tours, four villagers are hiding behind objects outside, and the player must find all of them within the time limit. Villagers can hide behind trees, houses, and public works projects, and they occasionally peek out from behind their object, revealing themselves to the player. More medals are rewarded based on how much time is remaining when the player finds the last villager. During these tours, a different music track plays than in all other tours.

In multiplayer, the time limit is reduced from eight minutes to five minutes.

There are three hide-and-seek tours: Easy Hide-and-Seek Tour, Official Hide-and-Seek Tour, and Elite Hide-and-Seek Tour. In the Easy Hide-and-Seek Tour, the villagers stand slightly off-center behind their objects, making them easier to see. In the Official Hide-and-Seek Tour, the villager stand centered behind their objects. In the Elite Hide-and-Seek Tour, buried pitfall seeds also appear.

The randomly-generated map for the hide-and-seek tours is split into two sections by a river; there are two bridges connecting the sections. There are five villager houses (which cannot be entered) and various public works projects spread around the map. The map also contains rocks, trees, ponds, and beaches on the south and west or east ends that are accessible via inclines. Bugs, fish, sea creatures, flowers, and exotic fruit can be obtained in all three difficulties, and pitfall seeds can be obtained in the three-star difficulty.

Gardening

In these tours, there is a 5×5-tile flower bed in the starting area, and the player must pick up flowers from around the map and plant them in all 25 tiles within the time limit. Once a flower has been planted in the flower bed, it cannot be picked back up. More medals are rewarded based on how much time is remaining when the player plants the last flower.

There are three gardening tours: Easy Gardening Tour, Official Gardening Tour, and Elite Gardening Tour. In the Easy Gardening Tour, any flowers can be planted in the flower bed. In the Official Gardening Tour, the player must plant flowers of a specific type or color. In the Elite Gardening Tour, the player must plant flowers of a specific type and color. In the two-star and three-star difficulties, the player receives a penalty of 10 seconds for every incorrectly-planted flower.

The randomly-generated map for the gardening tours is split into two sections by a river; there are two bridges connecting the sections. The map also contains rocks, trees, ponds, and a beach on the south end that is accessible via an incline. Bugs, fish, flowers, and exotic fruit can be obtained in all three difficulties.

The Tuna-Kahuna Tour and Shark-Battle Tour are different, taking place on an island surrounded by sea on all sides; this map contains bushes, trees, and palm trees. Some fishing tours take place at night, depending on what fish need to be caught. Flowers and exotic fruit can be obtained in all tours.

The Tuna-Kahuna Tour is one of three tours that rewards 20 medals for a gold rank, the highest amount for a single tour.

Balloon popping

In these tours, balloons float across the map in one direction, and the player must pop as many as possible within the time limit using a slingshot. The direction of the wind (which is denoted on the Touch Screen) changes every 30 seconds for the first two minutes, and every 20 seconds for the last three minutes. The locations of the balloons are shown on the map, and there are two types: round balloons, which give one point, and bunny balloons, which give three points. More medals are awarded based on how many points the player earns.

In multiplayer, each player has their own set of colored balloons, and they are only rewarded points for popping their own color of balloons.

There are three balloon-popping tours: Easy Balloon-Hunt Tour, Official Balloon-Hunt Tour, and Elite Balloon-Hunt Tour. The Easy Balloon-Hunt Tour has only rocks as obstacles. The Official Balloon-Hunt Tour adds trees and buried pitfall seeds. The Elite Balloon-Hunt Tour increases the quantity of trees and buried pitfall seeds.

The randomly-generated map for the balloon-popping tours is split into two sections by a river; there are two bridges connecting the sections. The map also contains ponds and a beach on the south end that is accessible via an incline. Bugs, fish, and flowers can be obtained in all three difficulties, and exotic fruit and pitfall seeds can be obtained in the two-star and three-star difficulties.

Easy Item-Matching Tour

The layout of the buried items

In these tours, pairs of items are buried in a grid formation. The player digs up an item, and then they must dig up its match; the name of the current item is displayed above the player's head. If a non-match is dug up, it is reburied; the current item can also be buried by digging a new hole, allowing the player to move onto a different item pair. The tour ends when all the items have been matched; more medals are rewarded based on how much time is remaining when the player completes the last pair. The player cannot access their inventory or unequip their shovel during these tours.

There are three item-matching tours: Easy Item-Matching Tour, Official Item-Matching Tour, and Elite Item-Matching Tour. In the Easy Item-Matching Tour, there are six pairs of items (12 dig spots) that must be matched. In the Official Item-Matching Tour, there are eight pairs of items (16 dig spots). In the Elite Item-Matching Tour, there are 10 pairs of items (20 dig spots).

The playable area of the map for the item-matching tours is always the same layout for each difficulty, being a rectangular arena surrounded by a wall of rocks. The arena grows in size with the increase in buried items in each difficulty. Outside the arena is an inaccessible beach on all sides of the map. Lloid does not appear in these tours, and no items can be obtained.

Toy hammer

In these tours, the player is equipped with a toy hammer and must hit a moving machine (which resembles Cornimer) as many times as possible within the time limit. The machine constantly moves in a straight line, changing direction when it hits a wall or obstacle. After being hit enough times, the machine begins to emit dark smoke and its movement becomes more unstable. If it is hit enough more times, it flips over for a few seconds, allowing the player to repeatedly hit it. More medals are awarded based on how many times the player hits the machine.

There are three toy-hammer tours: Easy Hammer Tour, Level-Up Hammer Tour, and Elite Hammer Tour. The Easy Hammer Tour has no obstacles in the arena. The Level-Up Hammer Tour adds rocks. The Level-Up Hammer Tour increases the quantity of rocks.

The playable area of the map for the toy-hammer tours is always the same layout, being a mostly square arena surrounded by a wall of bushes. Outside the arena is an inaccessible beach on the south end of the map. Lloid does not appear in these tours, and no items can be obtained.

A player navigating the maze in the Easy Labyrinth Tour

In these tours, the player starts in the center of a maze of bushes, and they must navigate the maze to find fruit to bring to Tortimer within the time limit. More medals are rewarded based on how much time is remaining when the player brings all the items to Tortimer.

There are three maze-navigation tours: Easy Labyrinth Tour, Official Labyrinth Tour, and Master Labyrinth Tour. In the Easy Labyrinth Tour, the player must collect five of one type of fruit. In the Official Labyrinth Tour, the player must collect three each of two types of fruit (six total). In the Master Labyrinth Tour, the player must collect three each of three types of fruit (nine total).

The maze is randomly generated each time the tour is played, and outside the maze is an inaccessible beach on the south end of the map. Bugs can be obtained in all three difficulties. The fruit cannot be kept after the tour.

Ore collecting

A player uncovering a gold ore in the Easy Ore-Hunter Tour

In these tours, the player is equipped with a shovel and must hit the rocks scattered around the map to uncover and collect as much ore as possible within the time limit. Most ore is worth one point, but certain ore types can be worth more points depending on the difficulty. The player is scored based only on the ore in their inventory when the tour ends. More medals are awarded based on how many points the player earns.

There are three ore-collecting tours: Easy Ore-Hunter Tour, Official Ore Tour, and Elite Ore-Hunter Tour. In the Easy Ore-Hunter Tour, one ore type is worth three points, and there are four of that ore across the map. In the Official Ore Tour, the there is also one type of ore (of which there is only one of) that is worth 10 points, but Tortimer does not tell the player which type it is. In Elite Ore-Hunter Tour, there are now two of the 10-point ore. Each difficulty raises the score requirements for each rank.

The randomly-generated map for the ore-collecting tours is split into two sections by a river; there are two bridges connecting the sections. The map also contains rocks, trees, ponds, and a beach on the south end that is accessible via an incline. Bugs, fish, flowers, and exotic fruit can be obtained in all three difficulties. The ore cannot be kept after the tour.

Easy Fossil Finder's Tour

The sample room

In these tours, there are two houses at the top of the map. The left house is a sample room that has fossils on display, and the right house is an empty display room. The player must dig up fossils buried throughout the map and recreate the sample room in the display room. The tour ends when the player leaves the display room after placing down the required fossils in the correct spots, and more medals are rewarded based on how much time is remaining.

In multiplayer, each player has their own set of sample and display rooms.

There are three fossil-finding tours: Easy Fossil Finder's Tour, Official Fossil Hunter's Tour, and Elite Fossil Hunter's Tour. In the Easy Fossil Finder's Tour, the player must find and place two fossils in the display room. In the Official Fossil Hunter's Tour, the player must find and place three fossils in the display room. In the Elite Fossil Hunter's Tour, the player must find and place four fossils in the display room, and the names of the fossils are not shown in the sample room.

The scavenger-hunt list

In these tours, the player is given a scavenger-hunt list, and they must search five vacant houses throughout the map for the three listed furniture items and bring them to Tortimer within the time limit. More medals are rewarded based on how much time is remaining when the player brings all the items to Tortimer.

There are three scavenger-hunt tours: Easy Scavenger Tour, Official Scavenger Tour, and Elite Scavenger Tour. In the Easy Scavenger Tour, each house has five furniture items. In the Official Scavenger Tour, each house has nine to 10 furniture items. In the Elite Scavenger Tour, each house has seven to eight furniture items, with several incorrect items that are similar in appearance to the ones listed.
