Real-world information[edit]
The Mekong giant catfish (Pangasianodon gigas) is a species native to the Mekong basin in Southeast Asia. Due to overfishing and habitat loss, it is considered critically endangered. The barbels, or whiskers, of the Mekong giant catfish diminish with age, as well as their teeth. Both are absent by the time the fish reaches 30cm in length. This is one of the largest freshwater fish, able to grow to 200kg and 3m in length. Once it reaches one year of age, the Mekong giant catfish primarily feeds on algae, and is cannibalistic or eats zooplankton as a fry.
