This article is about the part time employment given to the player by Tom Nook. For part-time job offered by Brewster in New Leaf, see The Roost.
Tom Nook offering the player a part-time job in Animal Crossing: City Folk

A part-time job[1] is a quest given to the player by Tom Nook in all games in the Animal Crossing series prior to Animal Crossing: New Leaf. As soon as the player moves in to town, Tom Nook will offer part-time employment at his shop, in order to partially pay off their newly acquired house home loan. It effectively serves as a tutorial, and consists of straightforward tasks such as making deliveries and posting on the Bulletin Board. During the part-time job, the player should wear the Work Uniform given to them by Nook, which is a rare item that cannot be bought or obtained elsewhere. Completing the part-time job reduces the player's home loan by 1,400 Bells (this usually means they will still have 18,400 Bells to pay off at the post office or town hall, except in Animal Crossing, where the player gives Tom Nook a bag of 1,000 Bells at the start of the game) and must be completed in order to progress in the game.

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Tom Nook does not require the player to work for him anymore, because the player now starts off living in a tent and must pay 10,000 Bells (the 'down payment') in order to obtain a house. Isabelle's "advice for living here" at town hall serves as a partial replacement. Also, when The Roost is built and the player buys seven cups of coffee, Brewster will offer them a part-time job that involves making coffee for customers.

Appearances

In Animal Crossing

In Animal Crossing, the list of tasks is as follows:

  • Plant some tree saplings and flowers around Tom Nook's store. However, in reality, the player can plant them anywhere they like.
  • The player must introduce themselves to all of the current villagers in town, and Tortimer.
  • Deliver a piece of furniture to a random villager. The player will receive a reward in return.
  • Send a letter to a specific random villager on stationery given to the player by Nook. It does not matter what the player writes.
  • Complete at least one villager favor, such as a delivery or retrieval.
  • Deliver a carpet to a random villager. The player will receive a carpet in return.
  • Deliver an Axe to the same villager that the player sent the letter to. The villager will comment about the letter.
  • Post a message on the Bulletin Board.

In Wild World

In Animal Crossing: Wild World, the list of tasks is as follows:

  • Change into Work Uniform.
  • Plant three tree saplings and four flower seed bags around Tom Nook's store. However, in reality, the player can plant them anywhere they like.
  • The player must introduce themselves to all of the current villagers in town (three in a new game), and Tortimer, who is outside the Town Hall. However, the player must talk to at least one of the villagers a second time, which will cause them to ask for the player's birthday.
  • Deliver a piece of furniture to a random villager. The player will receive a piece of furniture in return.
  • Send a letter to a specific random villager on a sheet of Lined Paper given to the player by Nook. It does not matter what the player writes.
  • Deliver a carpet to a random villager. The player will receive a carpet in return.
  • Deliver a Watering Can to the same villager that the player sent the letter to. The villager will comment about the letter.
  • Write an ad for Nook's shop on the Bulletin Board. Again, the player can actually write whatever they like.

In City Folk

In Animal Crossing: City Folk, the list of tasks is as follows:

  • The player must introduce themselves to all of the current villagers in town (six in a new game), and Tortimer, who is inside the Town Hall.
  • Change into Work Uniform.
  • Plant three tree saplings and four flower seed bags around Tom Nook's store. However, in reality, the player can plant them anywhere they like.
  • Deliver a piece of furniture to a random villager. The player will receive a piece of furniture in return, and the villager will ask for the player's birthday.

Trivia

  • If, after Tom Nook asks the player to change into their work clothes, they go outside the shop and drop the Work Uniform on the ground (or place it in the Recycle Bin), Nook will give them another one when they re-enter the store. This can be repeated endlessly to obtain duplicates of the Work Uniform.
  • The same can be done when Nook asks the player to send a letter to a villager; the player can go outside, drop the sheet of Lined Paper on the ground, and get offered another sheet from Nook when they re-enter. Although each sheet of paper is only worth 10 Bells, this can allow the player to obtain stationery early in the game without having to buy any from Tom Nook's store.
  • If the player talks to Nook during the part-time job having changed out of their Work Uniform, he will be shocked and scold the player for not wearing their work clothes. He will then allow them to wear any shirt they like, as long as it does not "offend the customers."
