New Year's Day is an event in the Animal Crossing series that appears in all games to date. It is held on the first day of January, representing the real-life holiday of the same name. In Animal Crossing, villagers will gather near the wishing well from 6 AM to 11 AM. By talking to the villager making a wish near the well, the player is able to make their own New Year's wish by asking to go next. Katrina will also be present near the wishing well to read the player's fortune for the year for 50 Bells. She will give the player a fortune written on Fortune Paper, which is exclusive to this event and appears unorderable in the stationery catalog.
Additionally, the player receives 10,000 Bells from Mom in the mail, and they can talk to Tortimer to receive a random diary. If the player has upgraded Nook's shop past Nook's Cranny, he will also sell Mystery Bags for 2,000 Bells each.

- In Animal Crossing, Katrina asks the player if they would like to participate in her "sunshine lottery."[1] If the player has no spaces left in their letter inventory, she mistakenly says they need to make room in their "mailbox."[2] This erroneous text may refer to a point earlier in development where Katrina offered a prize similar to Nook's raffle, or it may be a reference to Nengajō, a type of New Year card that has lottery numbers printed at the bottom. It may also be a reference to the planned implementation of a special type of secret code generated specifically for contests.
- In Animal Crossing: City Folk, the New Year's shirts for 2000–2008 could never be obtained if playing the game exclusively in real time, since the game was released in November 2008, making them the only items in the series to have this property. For the Korean version of the game, this also applies to the 2009 and 2010 shirts, since the game was released in South Korea on January 28, 2010.
