The soft-shelled turtle is a river fish in the Animal Crossing series introduced in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. It appears as a large shadow that can be found in rivers from 4 PM - 9AM from late summer to early fall.

"These relatives of common turtles will not let go when they decide to bite down on something. Although they can be quite shy, they will become a bit aggressive when threatened. They are often found in water and are very good swimmers because of the flat shape of their shells. They swim with their snouts over the surface of the water so they can breathe. Soft-shelled turtles aren't safe to hold because they are so prone to biting at the slightest movement. However, if one bites down on you, it will usually let go when you put it safely back in the water."

In New Horizons

When donating to Blathers or selecting "Tell me about this!" in New Horizons, he will provide the following information about the fish:

"The soft-shelled turtle is not one to shy away from biting when provoked. In addition to its powerful bite, this little critter has the ability to breathe both above and below water! It has an unusually long neck which it uses for both breathing and biting. Come to think of it, how did you manage to avoid being bitten? Well, it's a fearsome critter, but just look at that face! Rather silly, wot?"

Once donated to the museum, the soft-shelled turtle can be found in the recessed pond in the entrance exhibit room with the loach and snapping turtle.

During a Fishing Tourney, when given a soft-shelled turtle, Chip will say the following:

"You know, the soft-shelled turtles here in town are really tasty! Trust me; an expert angler like myself always knows! OK, time to eat! YUM!"

Real-world information

Soft-shelled turtles spend most of their time swimming around in the water, but can be seen basking in the sun on land. They live near ponds, rivers, and marshes, mostly in southeastern South Carolina, Southern Georgia, and Florida. Soft-shelled turtles can eat snails, fish, crustaceans, insects, and very rarely small birds.
