Once a money rock has been hit once, an internal timer starts. The rock can be hit a maximum of eight times, leaving one bag of Bells on each adjacent tile. After the player has hit the rock eight times or the timer runs out, the rock will no longer produce Bells. If a tile is already occupied, the Bell bag for that tile will not appear. Because the player is pushed back from the rock after each hit, digging holes behind them or otherwise preventing the pushback is required to hit the rock the maximum number of times within the time limit.

If more than one player is living in a town, which rock is the money rock on a given day differs for each player, allowing for a player to collect money from multiple rocks in a single day.
Every day, a Money Rock, also known as a Bell Rock, will randomly appear around town and spurt out Bells after being hit with a shovel or an axe. The rock can be hit repeatedly for increasing amounts of money although the allotted time window for a hit to produce money decreases after each hit. The amount of money the rock gives varies from game to game and depends on how fast it's hit, your level of yellow Feng Shui, and in the case of CF what it's hit with. Anything occupying a space around the money rock will also prevent bags from spouting there. In order to get the most from the money rock the player will need to prevent the kickback from hitting the rock (see below). For towns with more than one player, each player gets their own money rock from a random rock.

In PG, the rock will spurt out up to 23,300 Bells as three sacks of 100, three sacks of 1,000, and two sacks of 10,000. Having high levels of any (not just yellow) feng shui will increase the chance of more money spouting from the rock.

In CF, the money that comes out is different. The order goes: 100, 200, 300, 500, 1,000, 2,000 and finally 4,000. If the player uses a silver shovel, one of the money bags may double, with a signature noise and sparkle; it has a 10% chance of happening. It has been proven that high yellow feng shui (over 73 yellow feng shui count) means that an 8,000 Bells bag will appear. If the two are combined, that's up to 10,100 Bells. Having a silver shovel equipped will cause twice the amount of money to pop out 10% of the time.

*100 200 → 400 → 800 → 1,000 2,000 4,000 → 8,000 — total of 8,500 / 16,500 Bells

Preventing Kickback
+
In short
After every hit against the rock, the player will bounce back, causing the player to lose time and making it impossible to collect all of the potential money sacks. To prevent this, two holes can be dug in positions that will prevent the player from bouncing out of range. While facing the rock, with one hole placed behind the player, another can be placed to either the right or left (see first formation below), or adjacent to the first hole (see second formation below).
+

In CF, hitting a money rock with a silver shovel gives a 10% chance each hit of the Bell bag produced being double its normal value. Additionally, having money power through fêng shui increases the time limit, and it is required to have enough time for the eighth Bell bag to appear.

Alternatively, the player can stand at a diagonal to the rock, and place two holes in the spaces diagonal to the player (see third formation below). For maximum bell output, each hole should be at least one space away from the rock in order to maximize the number of money bags received, as holes next to the rocks will prevent any money bags from dropping in that spot. For this reason, the third formation can be seen as a safer equivalent of the second.
+
The Bell values produced by the money rock are as follows (italics indicates the increased timer caused by fêng shui is required):
 +
*100 → 200 → 300 → 500 → 1,000 → 2,000 → 4,000 → 8,000 — total of 8,100 / 16,100 Bells
 +
Clear

Natural features, such as trees and cliffs, can also be used to prevent kickback if available, taking place of one or more holes. For this reason, it may also be useful to strategically plant a tree near a rock to reduce the amount of digging required to find and make use of the Money Rock.

In NL, fêng shui no longer affects the timer, and as a result the eighth Bell bag can be received by default. Having bad money luck from Katrina decreases the values of Bells, while having good money luck increases them.

The player hitting a money rock in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

The money rock (conjectural name[nb 1]) is a rock that produces Bells when hit with a shovel or axe. Each day a single rock in the player's town becomes a money rock and can be hit repeatedly to produce increasing amounts of Bells.

After four consecutive hits, the 1-Up sound effect from the Super Mario series plays with each hit.

If more than one player is living in a town, which rock is the money rock on a given day differs for each player, allowing for a player to collect money from multiple rocks in a single day.

Appearances[edit]

In the first-generation games[edit]

The player hitting a money rock in Animal Crossing

In every first-generation Animal Crossing game, the money rock turns red when hit the first time before fading back to gray, indicating how much time is left to hit it. The values of Bells produced by the rock is increased with good money luck from Katrina, and the time limit increases if the player has money power through fêng shui. Having money power through fêng shui is required to have enough time for the eighth Bell bag to appear.

The Bell values produced by the money rock are as follows (italics indicates the increased timer caused by fêng shui is required):

 • No money luck:
 • 100 → 100 → 100 → 1,000 → 1,000 → 1,000 → 10,000 → 10,000 — total of 13,300 / 23,300 Bells
 • With money luck:
 • 1,000 → 1,000 → 1,000 → 10,000 → 10,000 → 10,000 → 30,000 → 30,000 — total of 63,000 / 93,000 Bells

There is a unique money rock each day for each of the four players living in town, as well as one for visitors.

In Wild World[edit]

The player hitting a money rock in Wild World

In Animal Crossing: Wild World, having money power through fêng shui increases the time limit, and it is required to have enough time for the eighth Bell bag to appear.

The Bell values produced by the money rock are as follows (italics indicates the increased timer caused by fêng shui is required):

 • 100 → 200 → 400 → 800 → 1,000 → 2,000 → 4,000 → 8,000 — total of 8,500 / 16,500 Bells

In City Folk[edit]

The player hitting a money rock in City Folk

In Animal Crossing: City Folk, hitting a money rock with a silver shovel gives a 10% chance each hit of the Bell bag produced being double its normal value. Additionally, having money power through fêng shui increases the time limit, and it is required to have enough time for the eighth Bell bag to appear.

The Bell values produced by the money rock are as follows (italics indicates the increased timer caused by fêng shui is required):

 • 100 → 200 → 300 → 500 → 1,000 → 2,000 → 4,000 → 8,000 — total of 8,100 / 16,100 Bells

In New Leaf[edit]

The player hitting a money rock in New Leaf

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, fêng shui no longer affects the timer, and as a result the eighth Bell bag can be received by default. Having bad money luck from Katrina decreases the values of Bells, while having good money luck increases them.

The Bell values produced by the money rock are as follows:

 • Bad money luck:
 • 100 → 100 → 200 → 300 → 500 → 1,000 → 2,000 → 4,000 — total of 8,200 Bells
 • No money luck:
 • 100 → 200 → 300 → 500 → 1,000 → 2,000 → 4,000 → 8,000 — total of 16,100 Bells
 • Good money luck:
 • 200 → 300 → 500 → 1,000 → 2,000 → 4,000 → 8,000 → 16,000 — total of 32,000 Bells

If a money rock is hit with a silver shovel, there is a 20% chance that the rock will produce ore instead of Bells.

In New Horizons[edit]

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, in addition to on the player's island, several money rocks appear on the money rock and scorpion islands on Mystery Island Tours. Beginning in version 2.0, Katrina's money luck affects money rocks, with good luck increasing the values of Bells, and bad luck preventing money rocks from appearing at all.

The Bell values produced by the money rock are as follows:

 • No money luck:
 • 100 → 200 → 300 → 500 → 1,000 → 2,000 → 4,000 → 8,000 — total of 16,100 Bells
 • Good money luck:
 • 200 → 300 → 500 → 1,000 → 2,000 → 4,000 → 8,000 → 16,000 — total of 32,000 Bells
Money Rock NH.gif

If the player has energy points from food and breaks a money rock before its Bells have been dispensed, 8,000 Bells, or 16,000 Bells with good money luck, appear.
