Cousteau is a jock frog villager in the Animal Crossing series who debuted in Doubutsu no Mori. Although, like most frogs, he was absent in Animal Crossing: Wild World, he reappeared in Animal Crossing: City Folk and has been in every game since.
In the English version of the franchise, many aspects of Cousteau are taken from France and French stereotypes; his name is French (possibly referencing Jacques Cousteau, a famous Frenchman who researched the ocean), and his initial phrase, "oui oui", is French for "yes yes".
Characteristics
Appearance
Cousteau is a yellow frog with orange spots and a black handlebar mustache. Relating to the French theme, his species can be seen as a jab at the common French stereotype in which frogs, specifically frog's legs, are commonly eaten.
In the Japanese version, he seems to be more Chinese-influenced; he is named "Harumaki", which means "spring roll" (a Chinese appetizer dish), and he wears a Noodle Shirt in Doubutsu no Mori. In all versions of the games, whether Chinese or French, he retains a Asian-themed house with his favorite song being "Imperial K.K.", more fitting with the former theme than the latter.
Personality
Below is a brief description of the jock personality. For more information, click here.
As a jock villager, he will be outgoing and will always enjoy exercising and staying fit and is friendly towards the player, but he will not get along with lazy villagers due to their lack of exercising and he will not get along with snooty villagers since he does not care about fashion and he will ask about their weight and physical appearance. He will get along with normal and peppy villagers.
