Projects allow the player to customize their town by adding new buildings, upgrading existing buildings, and adding various features to areas throughout their town. These projects are initiated by the player, who now takes on the role as the mayor. The concept is similar to the ability for the player to use the town fund in CF to install a new bridge, fountain, and a windmill or lighthouse; in New Leaf, however, the options are more diverse and customizable.

A public works project is a structure in NL that can be built in the player's town by the mayor. Projects include structures such as decorations, bridges, benches, signs, and buildings.
Initiating a project
Only one project can be worked on at a time. Players unlock projects when villagers want to speak to players. Once projects are unlocked, the player may choose a location to start a selected project: Isabelle, the mayor's assistant, will follow the player until he or she chooses a location for the project. Isabelle will either approve the location or state why the location is not adequate (not enough space, too close to a home, etc.). Public works projects cannot be built on the beach.

Once the location is set, the area is fenced , and Lloid appears. If the project has no fence (such as a Main Street upgrade), Lloid will be in the Train Station or Town Hall (the latter only for the Town Hall renovation). Once spoken to, Lloid will state how many bells are required to build the project. Players are mostly responsible for the funding, though villagers may sometimes contribute. Once funding has been completed, the new structure will appear the next day.

Once a project is fully completed, a ceremony will be held in which Isabelle announces the completion of the project to villagers and the player. The Reset Center is an exception; it has no completion ceremony. After this, the player may start work on a new project.
+
Public works projects are similar to objects in . In HHD and NH, public works projects are replaced by the ability to place furniture items outside, and some of the projects from short are turned into furniture items.

Most projects can be demolished for 10% of their construction fee, by speaking to Isabelle while no other public works project business is going on. Major landmarks, such as the Police Station and the Campsite, however, cannot be demolished.
+
Building a public works project
 +

 +
Once the mayor receives the development permit, they can view a list of unlocked public works projects at the desk at town hall. Once a project is chosen, the player chooses a location in the town to build it, and a plot is set down containing Lloid, who accepts donations to build the project. The town's villagers donate small amounts each day. Once the donation goal has been met, the project will be built the next day and a completion ceremony can be held.

Only one public works project can be built at a time, and a maximum of 30 projects can be built. Exceptions to the 30-project limit include the café, police station, Reset Surveillance Center, any projects on Main Street, and any town hall or train station renovations.
List of projects
Facilities
These cannot be demolished, and only one of each may be built. The Dream Suite, Fortune Shop and museum expansion appear on Main Street, instead of in town.

Completion ceremony
 +

 +
When a public works project is built, the next time the mayor sits at their desk at town hall, Isabelle asks them if they want to attend a completion ceremony. If they accept, the player, Isabelle, and a few villagers will attend the ceremony at the location of the project. Isabelle will congratulate those who donated to the project, and the mayor will be prompted to deliver one of three responses: "We did it!", "Hooray for everyone!", or "On to the next project!". The attendees then pull out and use party poppers. After the ceremony, Isabelle returns to town hall while the villagers and player stay at the ceremony site.

PWPList
+
For some major projects, special characters pertaining to them appear at the ceremony. For example, Celeste attends the ceremony for the museum renovation.

 +
Demolition
 +

 +
Once a project is built, it can be demolished for 10% of its build cost. The demolition takes one day, during which the mayor cannot initiate any more projects. Some projects, such as the café and the campsite, cannot be demolished.
 +

 +
Unlocking public works projects
 +
There are 13 public works projects available by default; the rest must be unlocked. The most common unlock method is from villagers, who can go up to the player and suggest a project. Some projects can only be suggested by certain personality types, while some can be suggested by any villager. Other projects are unlocked after the player completes specific conditions.

A completion ceremony for the fountain public works project

A public works project is a structure in Animal Crossing: New Leaf that can be built in the player's town by the mayor. Projects include structures such as decorations, bridges, benches, signs, and buildings.

Public works projects are similar to objects in Doubutsu no Mori e+. In Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, public works projects are replaced by the ability to place furniture items outside, and some of the projects from New Leaf are turned into furniture items.

Building a public works project[edit]

Lloid asking for donations for a public works project

Completion ceremony[edit]

Completion ceremony for stone bridge project

When a public works project is built, the next time the mayor sits at their desk at town hall, Isabelle asks them if they want to attend a completion ceremony. If they accept, the player, Isabelle, and a few villagers will attend the ceremony at the location of the project. Isabelle will congratulate those who donated to the project, and the mayor will be prompted to deliver one of three responses: "We did it!", "Hooray for everyone!", or "On to the next project!". The attendees then pull out and use party poppers. After the ceremony, Isabelle returns to town hall while the villagers and player stay at the ceremony site.

For some major projects, special characters pertaining to them appear at the ceremony. For example, Celeste attends the ceremony for the museum renovation.

Demolition[edit]

Isabelle reacting to the player choosing to demolish a public works project

Once a project is built, it can be demolished for 10% of its build cost. The demolition takes one day, during which the mayor cannot initiate any more projects. Some projects, such as the café and the campsite, cannot be demolished.

Unlocking public works projects[edit]

There are 13 public works projects available by default; the rest must be unlocked. The most common unlock method is from villagers, who can go up to the player and suggest a project. Some projects can only be suggested by certain personality types, while some can be suggested by any villager. Other projects are unlocked after the player completes specific conditions.
