Gladys is a normal ostrich villager in the Animal Crossing series. She first appeared in Doubutsu no Mori e+ and has appeared in all subsequent games. Her name could be derived from the Everglades, where many cranes live.

In New Horizons, Gladys has the education hobby and can be seen wearing rimmed glasses, reading a novel while outside, and using a magnifying glass when near certain objects.

Gladys is a gray and white ostrich with large, black eyes. Her appearance is based on the red-crowned crane. The top of her head is red, and unlike other ostriches, she has no hair protruding from her head. The upper part of her face, her wings, her abdomen, and the upper part of her legs are white, while the lower part of her face and legs are gray.

As a normal villager, Gladys will appear friendly and hospitable towards the player and other villagers. Like other normal villagers, she will have an unseen obsession with hygiene and cleanliness, which she mentions when the player visits her in her home. Other than her hygiene interests, she will appear neutral and open-minded when discussing hobbies, such as gardening, bug catching, fishing, and so on. Like other villagers, she will from time to time ask the player for favors, feeling sorry for having to ask for help, but appearing very gracious once the task has been completed. She will get along easily with other villagers, but may conflict with lazy villagers when they talk about food and leading her on to suggest making them dinner or lunch for them, and when talking to cranky villagers who have an interest in planting false information and gossiping about other villagers, which conflicts with the kind nature of the normal personality type. Like all normal villagers, she easily gets upset, usually in conversation when lazy villagers mislead her or cranky villagers who have a rude nature.

    • Gladys's e-Reader card profile, Pocket Camp description, and Pocket Camp crafting request item of a loom allude to the Japanese folklore Tsuru no Ongaeshi (White Crane's Return of Favor). In a popular version of the story, a white crane is rescued from a trap by an elderly couple. It takes the form of a woman and works as a weaver at the couple's house in return of the favor. Later, the old man peeked into her workplace, only to find a crane weaving with its own feathers. Upon the revelation of the secret, the crane parted with the old couple and flew away.
      • The loom and other clothing-related items inside of Gladys's New Leaf and New Horizons houses, and the loom item unlocked for doing Gladys's Happy Home Designer and Happy Home Paradise house requests, also allude to this folklore.
      • Similarly, Blanche, another white ostrich, contains clothing-related items inside of her New Horizons house, and has the loom as a required item for her Happy Home Paradise loom-related house request.
